With the 2006 launch of the Nintendo Wii game system, the company has once again changed the way players video games are played. As of September 2007, Nintendo proudly announced that Wii has netted worldwide sales of over $13m. Critics claim that the Nintendo Wii has shattered its toughest competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which were released around the same quarter of 2006. 1Conjuring the name “Wii” has gathered several theories from both critics and fans of Nintendo. Some claim that “Wii” is a homonym for “we,” which represents how all players of every age group can enjoy the console. The two small i’s in the name may also signify two human figures who are playing the game alongside each other. Regardless of these, the original proposed name “Revolution” was traded for “Wii”, as it is easier to remember and straight to the point. 1The biggest factor of the Nintendo Wii is the Wii remote, which is a wireless controller that allows game movement by way of an infrared sensor. This means that whenever a player flicks his wrist or moves his arm, the character in the game performs a corresponding action. This feature has given the the Wii an edge over all other consoles in its generation. The Wii can support up to four Wii remotes simultaneously. Wii remotes are already available with specialized attachments, such as tennis racket and baseball bat for sports packs. 1At present, the Nintendo Wii game system from Nintendo is available in North and South America, Australia, Europe, and some parts of Asia, including Japan and countries in Southeast Asia. the Nintendo Wii game system retails at about $250, but the price can be lowered depending on the distributors. 1When the Nintendo Company released their first colored TV video game in 1977, there was not much hype on video gaming at that time. Many other competitors were stepping up to make TV watching more enjoyable through the introduction of attachable TV games. Over 30 years later, the face video gaming has developed dramatically, with a huge number of contenders vying for the top spot in the industry. 1Just when we though Nintendo has done enough with its record-breaking Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) from 1990 to 2003, they have done it again. In November 2006, Nintendo launched the Nintendo Wii game system in the United States and North America, where the unit sold over 5. 4 million dollars worth of merchandise within a year. Wii has even outshone the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 in record-breaking sales. 1As the successor of Nintendo Game Cube (GCN) which was launched in 2001, the Nintendo Wii game system is backwards compatible with discs for GCN. Wii also has Bluetooth connectivity and Wi-Fi, so players can communicate while playing, and even enjoy games in multiplayer mode. Wii updates for downloading can be accessed over the internet. 1Since Wii operates via a motion sensor bar, a wide range of games can be played by any avid gamer. Some of their first releases include the Nintendo Wii Sports pack, which allows players to move their characters by following the same body movements athletes do. The Wii Sports pack has mini-games for bowling, golf, tennis, baseball, and boxing. 1In the United Kingdom, some of the best-selling Wii games are Big Brain Academy and Mario Party 8. Big Brain Academy for Wii is said to be a great family activity, as multiplayer modes are supported, and players can enjoy a massive array of brain puzzles. Mario Party 8 brings back the well-loved Nintendo characters, with a selection of mini-games and activities for all ages. The Nintendo Wii was originally set to retail for $250 per unit.
