5 Tips to Make Business Travel Easier

By: Resa Heart

I'm not a person who loves to travel. Perhaps I should clarify that - I don't like the process of travel although I do often enjoy the destination. When the travel is for business purposes, that inconvenience factor associated with the travel increases. Because it's business, these trips may interfere with your personal life which also makes the imposition of the travel greater. But there are ways to plan for a better experience.

Cut your time down dramatically by avoiding long check in lines. Pack a small bag that can be carried on. Check in online and assign your own seat before you even leave for the airport. Be sure to ask about basic business services at your hotel when you check in so you can perform the same process before you have to leave.

Another tip is to pack light. Only take what you really need. This is easier said than done, but with practice, and the right suitcase, you can get much better. I used to take a small suitcase full of toiletries. But with the current rules in air travel security, I had to make some changes in my habits. I quickly found that I can along quite nicely with just the small baggie of items. If your bag is small enough, you can take you bag along on the plane with you and bypass the 30 minute wait at the baggage claim.

Once you arrive at your destination there are some things you can do to make your stay more pleasant. Before you go, research the location. Get the lay of the land and take a map with you. Better yet, get directions on-line, and take that information with you.

When you travel work in a little personal enjoyment. Ask the hotel help about good restaurants nearby to your hotel. If you are in a foreign land, sample some of the local cuisine. Even in more mundane locations, someone who lives locally may be willing to go to dinner with you and they'll likely know where the great local restaurants are.

Unless lounging around in your room with room service and a pile of magazines is your guilty indulgence, get out on the town and enjoy. Large cities often have plays and other sights to see and often it's a very positive experience to see the sights.

Business travel can be a trial but it can also have its fun moments. Plan well to keep the hassle minimized and try to work in some fun personal experiences and you may find that you don't object quite so vehemently the next time your boss informs you of an upcoming trip.
