A guide to bars in Murcia City, Spain. (Edition 2)

By: RussellMarsh

An Additional general guide to bars in Murcia.
Going for a drink in Muria City is a learning experience if you're English.
Whilst you can still go out the old fashioned English way (Go out at 6.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. The best bars in Murcia City don't liven up until around 1.00a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if you're in bed too early.

Here's a good tip: To get the best out of your night out in Murcia change your body clock to a Murcian night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't even think of going to a "proper" Murcia bar before 11pm. Before that, if you want to be around the place why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from the terrace. Then you couldwalk to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a liqueur in the "La Muralla" cocktail bar, one of the last remaining places in Murcia where you can see Murcia's original Arab Walls.

This is a follow up article in this series. Here's an additional selection of some of the bars in Murcia.

Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente Álamo.) Strangely for bars in Murcia City this is a Western themed bar with
cowboy outfits and saloon-style bars. It's actually a really good night out if you're up for a knees up!!.

Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Off the wall bar that is famous for miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. my head..) . Regular target for people on stag and hen parties in fancy dress at the weekends.

Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is next to the Roman Theatre. This bar has live music and sometimes features comedians on stage. It's well worth a visit.

Kennedy Bar (Callejón de Berruezo.) Cracking Irish bar that's busy all day. Get down here for some Guinness and premiership footy. Fantastic variety of other ales also. Live comedy on
Wednesdays. BOGOF on drinks when football matches are on.

Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) A city centre pub for the young crowd. The sounds range from
Blues to Rock to Jazz. Open until 3am.
Utopia (7 Velázquez.) Very different bar and is described by the owners as a bar-theatre. The fascinating décor imitates theatrical scenery. Utopia has all kinds of acts on stage ranging from actors reading monologues to musicians and small rock bands. When the live acts end it's mainly rock, blues and Britpop music.

La Codiga (Gran Vía Alfonso X ) One of the more "local" bars in Murcia. Latin rhythms abound in this club.
Chest wigs and medallions are optional ;-)

Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) This probably the most popular bar in Murcia, playing
Dance and seventies disco. Three rooms with different styles that accommodate most types. Fridays and Saturdays are stop out nights from 2am-6.30am. (Now see why you need to pace yourself?)

La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Martín de Porres.) Nice relaxed bar which offers music
from local talent. Also features really good exhibitions of paintings on the walls.

El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) Trying to escape from the techno music in all the Spanish clubs then El Mentidero is no different to the rest. Lively bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's near the
University.

Sala Fluid (Orilla de Azarbe.) Another techno rubbish joint that's open until around 6am. Good idea to get some strong coffee
before entering if you want to get through the night. Brilliant array of cocktails on offer, but take it easy or the legs may not last the night..

Royal Palace (17 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Open till 4am. This impressive place is housed in a complex that holds up to 2,000 revellers. the music is aimed at thirty somethings but inevitably, Latino rhythms are prominent.

Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Just a short way outside the city, Super 8 is an cool
bar/club which usually has one band on stage each week. It draws a youngish, mainly indie type bunch and opens from 12.30am-6.30am

Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Nearly all the clubs in Murcia City are on the outskirts due to noise considerations. Kallejon is no exception. There are two dance floors where you can hear music ranging from Spanish pop to commercial techno
rubbish (only my opinion). Opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (very late).

DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) DNC claims to be the only club in Murcia city centre. Located in the busy university zone. This is a really busy spot during term time. DNC plays standard pop as well as house music against a backdrop of trendy décor. Free drink with your admission.

That just about covers it for the second article on bars in Murcia City. There's plenty to be going on with anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia bars that you think should be mentioned then email me and let me have details. Cheers!!
