A brief guide to bars in Murcia.

Going for a drink in Muria City is great fun if you're English. If you like you can do the 'Brit' thing (Go out at 7.00p.m. and be back home by 12.00 the worse for
wear) it doesn't really work that well over here. Most of the bars in Murcia City don't liven up until around 1.30a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if you're in bed too early.

Here's a tip: To get the best out of your evening in Murcia change your body clock to a Murcian night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Earlier on, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (next to the Cathedral) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from there. You could then stroll to the Hotel Rincon de pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a liqueur in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the last remaining places in Murcia where the old Arab walls can still be seen.

Here 's a list of some of the best bars in Murcia.

El Albergue (19 Calle Vara de Rey.) Stays open until 3, serves cocktails and has real music on a Tuesday. It's popular with the younger crowd and it gets packed at the weekend.

Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel.) A traditional tapas bar not far from the cathedral in the heart of the Old Town. If you order a sherry here they'll think you're a local.

Icaro (Plaza Beato A Hibermón.) Handy for Murcia University, so expect a lot of students during term time. Again Icaro is a nice gaff for an early starter.

Mestizo (14 Doctor Fleming.) Chilled-out café during the day but in the evenings it becomes a lively bar. Buzzing atmosphere later as opposed to chilled out earlier in the evening..

Zanzibar (3 Calle Andres Baquero.) Here we have a busy small bar that serves just about every kind of drink you could ask for. Inside you'll find punters relaxing with anything from a milkshake to a cocktail. Happy hour is on Wednesdays from 9-11pm where b.o.g.o.f. applies.

B12 (17 Calle Trinidade.) A nice place but doesn't liven up until later. Start your night here with a quiet drink.

Itaca (7 Calle Mariano Vergara. Tel. 968 934 922) Near the Uni. Quite an unusual bar in that it's both bar and a bookshop. Frequented by local students having coffee during the day, then in the evening a more mature crowd arrive to blast away at the cocktails. Mojitos are the most popular drink. Bar Warhol (25 Calle Victorio.) Cool place for lovers of Pop Art with copies of the Underground mentor's
pictures on most walls. A trendy, cool gaff that's nice for a quiet chat and drink. One of the coolest bars in Murcia City.

El Bolo (29 Calle Vara del Rey.) Well chilled bar in the Old Town right in the party area. There are live gigs on Tuesdays and they have cocktail offers on Fridays and Saturdays. A good bar to start the night, then return for a drink later chill out.

La Bulla (Calle Montijo.) One of several Cuban style bars in Murcia serving mainly cocktails. Open till 3.30.

Josepe (9 Arquitecto Emilio Piñero.) A nice tapas bar that opens all day. They have historic paintings and photographs of Murcia around the place. You could try a sherry and pan con tomate in the early evening as an alternative entree. The first bar in Murcia I call in..

Guanábana Jam (6 Plaza Cerámica.) A new club with stage and bars mainly showing live jazz, blues and soul. On Tues & Wed it's open till 1.00, while Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays It carries on on later till 3....

That should be enough for the first article on bars in Murcia City. There's a few to go at anyway.. Should you go to any other Murcia pubs that you think should be mentioned then get in touch and let me have details. Cheers!!
