Actions You Can Take To Help Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

By: Jennifer King

While UTI’s aren’t normally too dangerous if they‘re treated the correct way and A.S.A.P, they will still be uncomfortable and disruptive to your day-to-day life. Fortunately there are some simple steps you can take every day to stop chronic UTI’s from continuously infecting you. Firstly it is crucial that you perceive the causes behind your UTI’s and the symptoms that accompany bladder infections. After that we can discuss the daily tasks that can help discourage bacteria growth in your urethra.

What causes a UTI?

Sometimes you will hear someone call a bladder infection a urinary tract infection. Your urinary tract is constructed of a few parts, beginning at your kidneys, which leads to your bladder, and then to your urethra where urine exits your body. Therefore the terms urinary tract infection are often used interchangeably. Bacteria multiplying inside your urinary tract are the reason for all UTI‘s, including bladder infections. The bacteria is sometimes present near your vagina and vulva and then gets encouraged into your urethra from wiping from back to front after using the bathroom, friction during sexual intercourse, rubbing of too tight clothing, over use of antibiotics and a suppressed immune system.

While the resistance of sexual intercourse may cause the bacteria to enter your urethra, urinary tract infections are not sexually transmitted diseases, and are not transmitted from one person to another.

Prevention for UTI’s

An excellent way to prevent a UTI is to wipe yourself the proper way after using the bathroom. Because E. coli is the reason for approximately 80% of urinary tract infections, it is important to remember to wipe the proper way every time you use the bathroom so you stop the transfer of bacteria from your area around your rectum to your vaginal area. It is also important to keep your vaginal area as clean and moisture free (moisture encourages bacteria growth) as possible.

Drinking plenty of water, six to eight glasses a day, will also prove helpful in keeping your urination regular so you empty your bladder regularly. This constant movement of urine will stop bacteria from having the freedom to grow inside your urinary tract. Cranberries are another prevention for bladder infections. The cranberry juice makes your urine very acidic which makes a very unhealthy environment for the breeding of bacteria. The most beneficial way to consume cranberries is by taking concentrated cranberry pills or by drinking 100% cranberry juice. Avoid the cranberry juice cocktails you can buy as these mixes do not have adequate amounts of natural cranberry in them to treat a UTI.

It might sound unbelievable, but the underwear you wear could also promote bacteria growth in your vaginal area thus maximising the chance of bladder infections. As well as underwear you must also avoid wearing pants or jeans that are too tight to prevent the growth and possible insertion of bacteria into your urinary tract.
