Airports in Murcia and car hire

By: RussellMarsh

Murcia, Spain does indeed have its own airport, It's quite small but it has all most people need. Murcia airport caters for international flights and offers basic services such as regional transport and car hire.

More Precisely the airport is called Murcia airport, despite the fact that it lies about 45 km outside of the city near a small town called San Javier. Murcia Airport is perfectly located for the southern Costa Blanca and Costa Calida area, as it lies just in between three major cities: Cartagena, Torrevieja and Murcia. Also very handy for the LaManga area, it also attracts many thousands of tourists and golf dwelling residents every year.

Situated right in the triangle of Murcia, Torrevieja and Cartagena the San Javier airport is ideal for Mar Menor and La Manga visitors. With the growing interest, especially into the area around La Manga and Polaris World, the airport has become more popular amongst cut price airlines. However, it is still a very small airport compared to the one at Alicante.

If you are planning your vacation around the southern Costa Blanca or Costa Calida area, especially La Manga visitors, the airport of Murcia San Javier would be the ideal place to book for. As Murcia Airport is smaller and there are fewer flights you might consider Alicante airport which has many more international connections especially during the summer months. Whatever your plans are, make sure you arrange your airport transport or rent a car at the airport if you really want to explore the beautiful area and bask in the beautiful Murcia weather around Mar Menor and La Manga.3Unfortunately ground connections to and from Murcia Airport are rather limited. Public transport is not the greatest in Spain. Having only 3 daily direct bus connections to Murcia City itself (via the latbus company) and having no train station at the airport (the closest train station is about 10 km away) public transport is literally non existent.3

If you are a business traveler heading for the City of Murcia you can try to take the bus (if you're in luck and it coincides with your arrival time), but as a tourist heading for any of the beautiful towns around the area you are struggling for options. Depending on what your holiday plans, a car hire or a straightforward taxi might be the best choice. If you are planning a 'sightseeing and beach' vacation you really might consider renting a car at the airport.

Because of the size restrictions of San Javier, a private company decided to put up a new airport in Corvera, Murcia. A sleepy town, Corvera is perched on the southern slopes of Sierra de Carrascoy mountains and is only a quick ride from the city of Murcia. This will really open up Murcia to the cheap flight operators

The airport at Corvera is intended to serve the full range of European and British low-cost airlines. The town is rapidly expanding with new properties and facilities being developed, some of which are prestigious golf courses and country clubs. Corvera has beautiful melon and almond groves as well as spectacular landscapes. Plus, the famous La Murta Observatory is handy for a visit. With the region’s excellent climate and clear skies, It's a sure thing that more and more people will come here to holiday and live in the near future, which is why the new airport opening in 2008 will become the perfect destination option for travellers who would like to visit.
