Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Advice to Help You ...

By: C-P

Suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction is horrible - I know, because I've been there. The shame, the guilt, the confusion - you sometimes feel dirty in a weird kind of way, almost semi-human - and this can leave you feeling terribly lonely, isolated and misunderstood.
One of the things that makes it especially hard dealing with drug addiction or alcoholism, is that even though medically addiction is now generally regarded as a disease, a lot of people don't accept that or see it that way. It's not like coming out with a disease like cancer say, where you'll be embraced, encouraged and supported by almost everyone.
By admitting to an addiction, many people will think you're simply weak, have no self control and have serious issues. That's why I reckon denial is such a massive issue for so many alcoholics and drug addicts - because admitting that kind of problem almost means you're admitting you're weak and a failure.
Of course in your mind then its far better to believe your alcohol and drug abuse is under control - because of course you don't want to admit to being a 'failure,' or at least have others think that of you. There's a huge stigma attached to being seen as an addict - and who wants that? - so it's about mental self-preservation at the end of the day as much as anything.
So knowing where you can turn to for help, what you're dealing with, and what your options are, is really critical. Plus worrying about people finding out isn't an issue because there is excellent support and help available out there where your privacy and dignity will be totally safe-guarded.
But like with any illness - the worst thing you can do is to do nothing. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets. And that applies to you whether you're reading this as someone who has a drug or alcohol problem - or a family member/friend of one.
At this stage you may only think the problem is one of alcohol abuse or drug abuse - and that full blown alcoholism or drug addiction will never happen. In that case you will more than likely be surprised because it's often worse than you think.
So even whether or not you're entirely sure that you or someone you care about actually suffers from an addiction to drugs or alcohol - make sure that you educate yourself sufficiently to know and understand what you're dealing with, and to the various forms of help that is available. There is just too much at stake not to - if you consider the number of people that die each year from their addictions.
