Apple iPhone 3G - is this the perfect mobile phone?

By: Mobileshop.com LTD

After much speculation, the brand new, hyper-powered version of Apple's unique mobile phone was announced on June 9th, 2008. But how good is it... and is it going to shake up the world of mobile phones like never before?
iPhone - the back story
In 2007, Apple unveiled a mobile phone that they believed would revolutionise the mobile world, and allow them to become one of the dominant phone manufacturers on the market. That device was the iPhone, and although it certainly had a huge amount of hype behind it... well... the simple fact is it that simply wasn't as good as Apple wanted us to believe. Sure, it had an innovative O.S., an incredibly fluid, easy to use and fun user interface, and one of the best music players ever seen in mobile phones, but (and it's a huge but), it seriously disappointed in other areas. One of the most unfortunate missing features, something that people really drew attention to the absence of, was 3G.
Ok, the iPhone has WiFi and EDGE, but WiFi can be annoying to hunt down in the wild, and EDGE is, frankly, rubbish. That's a terrible pity, as the iPhone's internet browser beats all other mobile phones' browsers for internet access. It's just a pity it was crippled by the terrible connection speed. But the thing is... things have changed now. Apple have seen the error of not having 3G, and now they've made a new version. And this one HAS got 3G. And GPS. Oh, and it retains all the best bits about the first iPhone. Say hello to the obviously-named Apple iPhone 3G.
Apple iPhone 3G - the next evolution
With that in mind, is the new Apple iPhone 3G the perfect mobile phone that everyone is expecting? Well, in truth, no. Don't misunderstand me, it IS a gorgeous phone, and if we're talking about looks and raw sex appeal, it outperforms, well, ALL other mobile phones on the market. And the inclusion of 3G means that it can now compete against other mobile phones on their terms, instead of getting left waaaaaaaay behind. But the flaws lie in the things that Apple haven't fixed in the iPhone 3G. Despite having 3G, you don't get a front camera for video calls and you STILL can't send photo messages. On the topic of messages, you also can't forward your received SMS messages, a BIG oversight (consider the amount of forwarded jokes you have in your text inbox). You still can't capture video with the camera, and while we're on the topic of the camera, you still have the same 2 megapixel camera as the first version, which was not good to begin with. In a day and age where users DO want good cameras in their mobile phones (just look at the success of the LG Viewty for proof), that's not a good thing at all! So in conclusion, fanboys will be excited about the Apple iPhone 3G, the exact same way they do over anything St. Jobs makes. But me? Not a chance...
