Are Acne And Stress Related?

By: David Warple

Can acne be the resultant of ones lifestyle? No, however the body is affected with the way we live and skin is not an exception. The activity that we do in our spare time, the work that we do in our career can all effect our epidermis. This is positive for all who are prone to acne. Following are some of the common acne triggers that one may have never thought about and the ways to avoid them.

The environment in which you work is always at work on your skin. You should pay attention to everything your skin comes in contact with, especially anything that may be comedogenic (a substance that clogs pores). You could be interacting with these substances and not even know it. One example is the grease that is in the air in restaurants. This grease can cause your skin to film over, clogging your pores. Besides restaurants, oils from many other products are also comedogenic, including those used for factories, cars, and bicycles.

Believe it or not, sleep is one of the best things you can do to take care of your skin. Everyone knows that a full night's sleep of eight hours or more can be miraculous for your skin. Why is sleep so good for you? It is because if you are well rested, your body has strong immunities that can fight off infection. Although a healthy immune system cannot eradicate acne entirely, it will help your pimples disappear more quickly. For this to work, it is vital that you keep your sleep schedule regular. Any eight hour time period is good for sleep, even if it is during the day. Therefore, if you end up working late, make sure you sleep late as well.

It is true that exposure to the sun can initially improve acne, the benefits are temporary. Basking in the sun consistently can dry your skin and cause your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This causes the skin to slough old cells more frequently. When this extra dead skin is mixed with the extra oil, it creates the ideal environment for comedones (blocked pores).

It is vital that one use sunscreen for protection from the sun, when one is out in the sun for prolonged periods. For this one needs to find an oil free product with a minimum SPF 15 level and also with protection from UVA and UVB rays.

It is a fact that stress plays a major role in causing acne. "Ninety percent of my patients complain about what stress does to their skin. It has a huge impact, and it's becoming a bigger problem every day," says Katie Rodan, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford University.

Emotional anxiety caused from a number of factors in your life can read like a book on your face. This is purely a chemical connection. As you tense up, your adrenal glands start working, flooding your bloodstream with the hormone, cortisol. This causes the sweat glands in your face to produce more oil. When your sebaceous glands kick into high gear, it is very likely that this excess oil will mix with dead skin cells and clog your pores, trapping bacteria inside; thus resulting in more acne, primarily inflamed papules rather than blackheads or whiteheads.

To eliminate stress completely from ones life is almost next to impossible as this is part of being a human. Nevertheless one can minimize the damages by having a healthy lifestyle. A well balanced diet coupled with sound sleep of at least seven hours every night can help build a stronger foundation. A healthy and well rested body can withstand stress more effectively. Regular exercise or regular walk can prove beneficial. It is imperative to relax, one can read a book, take a bath, practice yoga or any other activity that can make one happy and calm. This is the vital step for good health not only for the skin but for the whole body.
