Banishing Acne Scars

By: David Warple

There are many who are unaware of the effective acne treatments that are available; therefore, most of them do not get treatment in the early stages. Unfortunately, scarring only occurs when the acne progresses from moderate into a more advanced state.

The best way to avoid acne scars is to halt its progression at the earliest possible time. There are times when untreated acne will heal on its own. However, if the acne continues to progress to the point where cysts and nodules begin forming, the probability of scarring increases.

Even though there are a few treatments available that will remove acne scars, some scaring is permanent or will require regular treatments. Generally, these great effects of acne scar treatments are only temporary.

Acne spots are painful and larger in the severe stage, than in the mild or moderate stages. If your case becomes severe, you will need to aggressively pursue treatment to stop any further acne progression. Consulting a doctor or dermatologist as soon as possible is vital to obtaining the correct medical advice and possible access to the best prescription medication for your needs. At this stage of your acne, effective treatment is the difference between curing your acne and suffering with acne scars for the rest of your life.

Because each case of acne is unique, the treatments vary according to individual needs. Some treatments are successful for some people but not for others. The same applies to treatments for acne scars. Because acne affects each person differently, each case of scarring will be unique as well. Due to this fact, treatment for scarring is tailored to the individual. Usually it is necessary to use a combination of treatments instead of just one.

There are six popular treatments for treating acne scaring. One or more of these treatments is sometimes used: Dermabrasion, Laser Resurfacing, Chemical Peels, Punch Techniques, Subcision and/or Augmentation.

Augmentation is the process of raising the crater-like scar by injecting into it collagen or fat taken from another area of the body. The results of this treatment are only temporary, so it must be repeated regularly. Dermabrasion and Laser Resurfacing can be expensive options and they are not always successful in removing the scars.

The cost and effectiveness of the various acne scar treatmnts can vary widely, with some being quite expensive, so it is important to consider all the options before deciding on the best course of action. A higher priced treatment does not always produce the best results. Facts rather than emotion should govern any decision regarding treatment. Your doctor is the best person to assist you in choosing the treatment that best suits you and your needs.
