Bird flu and its prevention

By: Steve Dcosta

What is "Bird flu"?

Bird flu or avian Influenza is a contagious disease among animals, or more precisely among birds. While all the birds are prone to this virus, poultry flocks or domestic birds are even more vulnerable to this disease syndrome reaching to an epidemic figure. In addition to risks to human health, it is important to estimate the effects of particular virus strains on birds.

This disease occurs in two forms one has milder effects inducing reduced egg formation or fall of feathers, whereas the other form results in a highly contagious and lethal disease which might get transferred to humans resulting to unavoidable loss for poultry industries and farmers. Scientists have even estimated that bird flu when coupled with human influenza can exchange genes when a person is simultaneously infected with both of them. This situation then would be almost impossible to handle with.

How does Bird flu spread?

There have been noticed around 15 viruses so far which cause different forms of bird flu across the globe. Although all of them do not show large destruction but viruses like H5N1, H7 and H9 are really devastating. These viruses might spread through bird droppings, contaminating dust and soil. Similarly, the virus can also be carried through from bird to bird, contaminated machinery or even from shoes.

How can bird flu be prevented?

Before trying to treat any medicinal procedures after the destruction we would have to follow the ways to prevent it first. To keep the chickens disinfected we would have to give utter care towards making them resistant towards infections. If the poultry stock has been found infectious one should try and do proper treatment of effected birds.

Since no vaccination has been prepared so far to counteract against the virus of bird flu scientists are showing a great concern about its effects on the human community in the future. A number of medicines have been prepared to fight against its effects. Medicines like Tamiflu have been trying to come up with their superb results, easy availability and cheap prices to prevent our lives from this epidemic disease.
