Birds And Yards A Perfect Partnership Fostered By The Gardener

By: Vin DeWolfe

Many households plant garden plots, decorative plants and trees in their yard. There are lots for planting a garden. Besides the potential for growing food and decorative plants, increasingly, gardeners are keen to invite birds to their property. Viewing thesebeautiful creatures hop around the yard is a real treat, almost as satisfying as seeing the garden grow.

Since birds are most likely to prefer planted areas that have a variety of plants, a yard is a perfect option for them. Branches of trees offer roosts, giving the birds protection from predators and a place to raise their chicks. Even standing tree stumps and logs can attract birds, the reason is because insects use them as feeding spots and the birds consume the bugs.

Birds, just like any other animal need fresh water. They will nearly always populate areas that offer them plenty of water. That's why it's important that you provide the birds you have with a water source. Your water source can be either a hand dug or natural pond, creek, river or it could be a bird bath. Rocks with depressions on their surface also make superb bowls for rainwater.

A water source on your property or garden will also attract insects that the birds will eat. Insects are an important source of many bird species and this should not be looked past. As you know very well, bugs are intersted in the things growing in your garden. They can cause bad damage to your garden and have to be controlled. Birds are the easiest way to do this. They are organic, cause no pollution and their songs fill the garden with beautiful music.

Seed eating bird species are commonly fed with specially crafted feeders. Most are equipped with squirrel proofing, still, those crafty critters still figure how to get in. Birds come in a wide range of shapes and sizes and eat specialized diets of seeds. Feeders for birds also can be found in a number of sizes and shapes from small liquid Hummingbird feeders to bigger feeding stations for Blue Jays and other species. If you wish to bring in a selection of bird species, different kinds of feeders can be put around the yard for each kind.

With all the vegetation planted, bird feeders added and a water source established, birds will be attracted to your property. When they get there, they'll be content to eat, drink and be merry all day long. Some of your birds will make nests in trees near by. But many of the birds will nest somewhere else if there are no accommodations available.

Individual birds, like humans, have their own ideas as to the kind of house they call home. Most commonly, man-made bird houses are lived in by Bluebirds, Robins, Chickadees, Wrens, House Finches, Flickers and Martins. By installing shelters of the right size and shape for each bird species, the gardener allows them a safe haven for their chicks. While the young are getting larger, its devoted parents can easily find food a short distance from the nest, thus keeping the baby within sight and well fed.

At most yard and garden stores, birdhouses can be found in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles. Since houses for birds are commonly quite simple, they can be easily created by the average person. It's also a project that a group of children, such as a scouting troop, can engage in. Having made and placed their custom birdhouse, children and adults alike will get a thrill out of watching new birds move in.

In order to get the most out of your garden, birds are really some of the best additions. They'll flock to you if they can find the resources. Every year, the birds will come back to lay their eggs, raise their babies and act as your own personal exterminator.
