Botox and Anti Aging Skin Care

By: Geoff Hopkins

The ever popular cosmetic treatment known as a Botox injection offers claims that it eliminates lines and wrinkles from the skin. During the non-surgical procedure, the substance Botulinum toxin Type A, not actual botulism, is injected under the skin into the layer of muscle beneath. Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Botox has been deemed as a safe way to rid the skin of those bothersome frown lines between the eyes.

What Botox does is to basically stop signals from nerve receptors from reaching the muscle layer. The hormone, acetylcholine, is responsible for telling muscles to contract. However, because Botox has prevented any interaction between nerve receptors and the muscles, muscular movement is limited to relaxation rather than contraction, causing a temporary paralysis on the area where Botox was applied.

Botox injections, however, do not last long. It takes only about 3 to 5 months of wrinkle-free skin before another set of Botox injections are needed to rid of the unsightly lines. By this time, the body's muscles would have produced a new batch of acetylcholine receptors and they would have regained their ability to receive signals from nerve endings for muscular contractions. In reality, the Botox procedure does not provide any guarantee that the wrinkles will disappear permanently.

Botox is most useful for treating wrinkles that are the result of muscle contractions as opposed to those that are merely the result of the aging process. As we get older, our bodies naturally produce less and less of the substances we need for young looking, supple skin, causing breakages within the layers of collagen. When there's a loss of collagen, the upper layers of the dermis are then visibly affected creating wrinkles. Although these particular types of wrinkles and lines are rather difficult to completely eliminate, the use of Botox may still soften their appearance considerably.

An alternative to the Botox procedure is the cream Argireline, whose chemical name is Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, or AH3. This synthetic peptide is one of the most common ingredients in anti-aging skin care products that are used as a substitute for Botox, and is sometimes referred to as a topical form of the chemical.

When choosing the best anti-wrinkle cream, always remember to check the product's ingredients on the packaging label before you buy. Better yet, read wrinkle cream reviews with wrinkle cream ratings in them to find the best anti-aging creams and serums for your type of skin.
