Buying Patio Furniture: A 3-Step Approach

By: John Radcliffe

You're all set to go out and buy that set of new patio furniture. Checkbook in hand, you set out, only to find out when you are in the showroom that there are a bewildering array of choices - and confused, you leave without buying anything. Sound familiar? If so, then why not use our simple 3-step approach ?

So, what's step 1? Simple: Choose Your Location. Before you rush out and buy something - THINK. Where is this patio furniture going to be used? Strictly out of doors, or sometimes indoors as well (perhaps in a sun porch)? And think about when you have to move this furniture - is it located in a convenient place? Could you really lift can carry the furniture to that location, or would another location be better?

Believe it or not, the answers to all of these questions will help you to determine the size and type of patio furniture that you will need. For example, if your storage shed is a long way away from your patio area, you should not select really heavy outdoor furniture - as you will have to lift and carry it that whole distance. Also, if you will be leaving your patio furniture outside all year, then you must make sure that it is made of materials that are durable and easy to clean.

But there's more: If you are buying patio furniture, just how much room do you have there? Don't overbuy on furniture - you will end up with too many pieces, and your patio area will be very crowded with all of that furniture jammed in too tightly. Buy what you need, but not more than you need, or what your patio area can comfortably hold.

Step 2: Choose Your Furniture pieces. All choices in basic outdoor furniture come down to one of these three types: tables, seating and recliners. As well, you can also choose from many types of accessories: everything from pillows and cushions, to swings, hammocks, grills, and even outdoor light fixtures.

The basic rule of thumb: buy quality patio furniture, not cheap junk. Buy less, not more. Make sure that everything matches. Make sure that your furniture is the proper size and weight.

Step 3 is the final step: Choose Your Materials. Consider carefully the types of materials used in the construction of your patio furniture. For example, if you purchase furniture constructed out of natural products (like wood and wicker), they will look stunningly beautiful, but if you want to keep them that way you will have to spend time (and money) on maintaining them properly. You can buy natural products like Teak, which wear better, but they are more expensive also. On the other hand, if you invest in patio furniture made from synthetic materials, you might spend less, and it will require less care, but the quality can vary - so be careful. Even if you buy metal furniture, it could still rust or get corroded. It's all a trade-off.

So there you have it. Simple, wasn't it? First, choose your location, next consider what pieces you will need, then choose the proper materials. Only one thing more is needed: your checkbook, as you head out the door for your local patio furniture dealer!
