Can what you do for a living can seriously reduce your life span?

By: Clive Cable

Considering healthy aging is some times not a priority during your working life. As a younger person you tend to go where the money is at; then later you might regret that decision.

Its true becoming a senior and aging doesn't high on your list when you are hungry for money and success. However you may find this has left it own undesireable effects on your future health. With young families and the desire to provide for them many people need to take work which might not be ideal just to support the family. But this could come back to haunt you in your later years.

All to many people have to work in places which would not be seen as healthy. But the need to survive today forces many in to work that involves chemicals, dust and toxic smoke.

Lets take for example working in a wood shop making household and office furniture. This is detrimental to the lungs and can possibily result in lung disease. Some machines in a wood shop operate using toxic glues and adhesives which produce unpleasant and even noxious vapours. The long term exposure to these sorts of hazards can cause respiratory dieases and other respiratory related illness.

Another unhealthy place to work in would be a coal mine., Coal miners are constantly exposed to risk to their health. The dust from the coal can lead to serious lung problems and disease such as pneumoconiosis. There are many men who have suffered with their health later in life because of working in a coal mine and many die much younger than on average.

The saw mill industry which is a big employer in a number of States is know to also have well above average incidence of health problems associated with it. Consider this during the peak season winter men can get ill from the extreme cold weather they often operate under. In addition if a tree falls it can cause serious injury or even death. Although the body of a young may fully recover from such an accident a man in his forties and fifites has much more brittle bones and may never recover.

Fishermen working in the fishing industry have a hard and dangerous job to do as well. Aging doesn't deter these men from their work sometimes they are out in the middle of the river or at sea somewhere and the storms hit sometimes turning the boat over and they are thrown in to icy waters. A fishermans work is heavy and dangerous this could cause them to incur back injuries amongst other things. On the plus side they get plenty of fresh air away from toxic chemicals and the pollution of big cities.

Truckers are another group of workers where they are exposed to frequent dangers which are detrimental to their health.Truckers will on many occasions drive for miles and miles with little sleep often endangering their own live and others.

Those more mature truckers still on the road well into their sixties are at even greater risk to their health, usually living with a unhealthy lifestyle for years can start to quickly effect an aging body. They often have bad backs, poor general health and the combination of life style and often poor diet make them prime candidates for heart attacks.

When the body starts getting older it needs more care and consideration to perform at the same level as before. Many older workers find this difficult as what once was a job they could do easily in their youth becomes much harder as old age sets in.

We may live to regret the way we treated our bodies when we were younger to earn and extra dollar but for sure we are likley to pay for this neglect later on down the track. Our bodies and minds need a combination of healthy diet and safe place to work, enough exercise and minmal stress to flourish and the sooner we pay attention to these in our life the better or chances of healthy aging.

Look carefully at how your work is effecting your health today and what that might mean in the later years of your life so you can age well and with good health.
