Common Restaurant Mistakes You Can Avoid

By: Patricia Farnham

There are a handful of little things that make a restaurant great. You may be surprised that they don't all have to do with the food that you serve or even the price that you charge for it. Paying attention to these details can make the difference between a person come into your establishment once and coming in again as a regular customer.

Everyone likes to feel comfortable when they come to a restaurant. Make sure that the chairs and booths you have are very comfortable to sit in. If you discover tears or stains you should do your best to take care of replacing them as soon as possible. It is also important that your seats are the right height for the tables.

Don't make the mistake of telling customers where they have to sit in your establishment. Some people like to sit by the window or the door so they an see who else is coming in. Others want a more discreet location in your restaurant. If you offer both tables and booths they may have a preference as to which one they want as well. You can still incorporate the role of a hostess but make sure they ask the guests if they have a seating preference.

While you have probably trained your staff to keep things clean, make sure they wipe down all the seats and the tables thoroughly. Sometimes sticky substances remain that can't be seen as they blend in to the color of the table. The next customer isn't going to appreciate setting their hands on the table and finding the mess though.

Customers will be expecting a friendly staff that can easily meet their needs. Your employees are there to represent your restaurant so make sure they are comfortable interacting with people. Those that are too shy may come across as not enjoying what they are doing. Make sure your staff understands the reasons why they need to genuinely welcome guests to the restaurant.

It is very frustrating when your needs aren't met at a restaurant. Constantly having to get the attention of the waitress for ketchup, napkins, a drink refill, or other things can quickly become frustrating. Staff needs to be detail oriented so they can anticipate such needs to help the customers enjoy their meal. This type of assistance means a great deal to your customers.

Don't forget to take some time to focus on the quality of the bathrooms you offer. Guests will expect them to be stocked with the items they need including soap, toilet paper, and paper towels. Try to get an employee to check them over on an hourly basis. This way you can take care of any issues that may be found in there.

If you are in the restaurant business, then chances are you offer some great tasting food. You will also have plenty of competition so to get customers to prefer your location you need to take care of some of these small details. They won't take up too much time and they won't cost you very much to implement. However, they can significantly improve your profits for your restaurant.
