Communication Revolution

By: alexis

You say you want a revolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world

-excerpt from the song Revolution by The Beatles

On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell first transmitted the sound of his voice using telegraph wires to his assistant Thomas A. Watson. Bell and Watson experimented first with acoustic telegraphy in 1874 and 1875. According to Wikipedia.com, Watson accidentally plucked one of the reeds and Bell at the receiving end of the wire heard the overtones of the reed. The overtones produced by the reed was the start of the idea to develop the “gallows” sound-powered telephone. This early model of the telephone was able to transmit voice-like sounds. Later on, Bell experimented with a water transmitter, using an acid-water mixture. This time, Watson found out that this medium was better in terms of sound quality. Since then, the telephone has revolutionized the way we live, socialize, and do business. By 1886, the Bell Telephone Company had already sold 150,000 telephones across the United States. Bell company engineers made numerous improvements to the telephone which developed into one of the most successful and influential inventions in human history.

Indeed, Bell started a revolution in communication. Through his hard work, communication underwent an evolution in terms of utility and technology. It is evident today that communication and the way we communicate has changed drastically. Even the telephone systems have evolved and surpassed many boundaries. Now, phone systems transmit more than just voice conversations but also documents and voice messages.

Communication has never been as important as it is today. Whether it is for personal matters or for business, every single person needs to be in touch. In business, two of the most important communication tools are the telephone and the facsimile machine. The conventional fax machine is used to scan a document by encoding the patterns or shades of light and darkness on a document into digital signals. The signals are sent over the phone line through a built-in modem. However, with the advent of the Internet, new means of business communication are being developed. Today, the Internet can also be used to send and receive fax messages. Even without a fax machine, documents can now be sent with the used of a personal computer with an Internet connection. Experts say that web-based services offer a quick and easy way to share documents without being tied down to the traditional fax machine.

Internet faxing is a simple solution that does not need require a user to have a high level of technical know-how. In addition, the user can also use a variety of document formats such as the Portable Document Format (PDF) attachments that can be sent by e-mail. You can send or receive faxes anywhere through a mobile computer, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), or smartphone (a mobile phone with personal computer-like functions) that has wireless Web access.
Although traditional means of communication will never be eradicated, it is important to understand that technology has allowed us to have more convenient ways to interact and communicate. Thanks to Bell's inventive mind and his great passion for communication, he paved the way for developing new channels of communication. Ideas, thoughts, and information are now easily transmitted over channels such as the telephone or a fax. The ability to communicate is now very accessible and can be deemed the most powerful attribute a human being possesses, and as such communication has truly evolved and has certainly changed our world.
