Converting Audio and Video Files

By: Chris Hoffman

You know you’ve entered the digital age when you realize you need your music or video files in a different file format.

If you’re like the average computer user, you’ve got some audio files, or music that you’ve either found on line or ripped from your own CD collection. Many times, these files are in the format you’re using right now, but what happens if you find that you need them in a different format later on for one reason or another?

Some people may search the internet again for the files in a different format. Aside from bumping into RIAA problems with P2P file swapping programs, many users may find that finding the files in a different format may be a little difficult. The same can be said for video files. How many times have you found a cool video clip on the internet only to have your computer yell at you it won’t play because you don’t have the right codec on your PC.

Instead, it might be easier, and certainly much more legal to simply convert the files yourself. One of the best tools to do this is Mystik Media’s Blaze Media Pro. Blaze Media Pro is available at http://www.mystikmedia.com.

Once you download and install it, converting your files is easy. All you have to do is follow these easy, step-by-step instructions.

To convert Audio Files:

1. Start Blaze Media Pro by choosing Start—All Programs—Blaze Media Pro, and then clicking the Blaze Media Pro icon.
2. Click the Convert Audio button.
3. When the Convert Audio dialog appears, click the green lined button (the first on the button bar near the top of the dialog box) and select the file or files you wish to convert. Once selected, they will be put into the list box.
4. Select the conversion frequency you want to use in your new, converted file. The higher the frequency, the better off your results will be. However, you should know that you’ll never get any better audio quality than the source file your converting from.
5. Select the Sound quality, either Mono or Stereo
6. Select the bitrate encoding. Again, the higher the bitrate, the better quality sound file you’ll have. Just remember, you’ll never get any better quality than the file you are converting from. While Blaze Media Pro’s conversion tools are extraordinary, getting it to produce a better quality sound file from the source file, is a challenge. You’re likely going to need to play with the conversion settings a bit to get the settings that are best for you.
7. Select the processor priority. The lower the priority, the quicker the conversion will take place.
8. Review your settings. Once you’re all set, review your choices to make certain that you’re using the right conversion settings.
9. Click the convert button.
10. Select the destination folder for your converted files. Blaze Media Pro will ask you to either select or create a destination folder to hold your files once it has converted them. Select or create your folder any where your computer can read and/ or create files.

While you can use your PC while the conversion process is going on, I certainly would think twice about it. Despite the processor priority setting in step number 7 above, I think you’ll get a better file conversion result and process if you select the lowest priority and let the computer go.

My experience with Blaze Media Pro has been exceptionally positive. In fact, I think its one of the best audio tools on the market today. Its audio tools, are perhaps some of the best available.

To convert Video Files:

1. Start Blaze Media Pro by choosing Start—All Programs—Blaze Media Pro, and then clicking the Blaze Media Pro icon.
2. Click the Convert Video button.
3. When the Convert Video dialog appears, click the green lined button (the first on the button bar near the top of the dialog box) and select the file or files you wish to convert. Once selected, they will be put into the list box.
4. Select the video type tab on the bottom half of the Convert dialog box that you want to convert to.
5. For AVI Files:
a. Select the frame rate you want to use. The higher the frame rate, the better quality video, and the larger the file.
b. Select the codec you with to encode with.
c. Configure the codec by clicking the blue configure link above the codec drop down. Any configurable options will pop up in a dialog for you to select.
d. Select the audio format you want to use. Please note, however, that when choosing video and audio codecs for AVI conversions, not all audio and video codec combinations are compatible. You’re going to have to play around with the settings a bit in order to find a combination that works together.
e. Choose the number of audio channels (mono or stereo)
f. Choose an audio bit rate.
6. For MPEG Files:
a. Choose a Video Frame Rate. The larger the rate, the bigger the file and the better the quality.
b. Choose a Video Bit Rate. The larger the rate, the bigger the file and the better the quality.
c. Choose the number of Audio Channels, mono or stereo.
d. Choose the Audio Bit Rate. The larger the rate, the bigger the file and the better the quality.
e. Choose an MPEG version. MPEG-1 files are used for Video CD quality videos. MPEG-2 files are used for DVD quality videos.
7. For WMV Files:
a. Choose a Video Format from the drop down.
8. Output File Settings
a. Choose a Video Width and Height. If needed, you can change the size of your converted video to fit what ever size you need.
b. Choose the streams you want to include in your file, audio, video or both.
c. Choose the start and stop points in your file. You don’t have to convert the entire thing. You can create clips, if you so desire, of just the most desired parts of your source file by changing the start and stop points.
9. Click the Convert button (the last button on the button bar) to convert your files.

Again, while you can use your PC while your videos are converting, but you’re best bet is to let your PC do its job without interruption.

Blaze Media Pro is easy to use. The conversions it does, both audio and video can save you time, money and are a huge convenience. If you need to get your audio/ video files from one format to another, Mystik Media has the best tool of choice: Blaze Media Pro.
