Decorating Cakes - Beautiful Cakes for Weddings

By: Owen Badua

Food is an important part of any celebration be it birthday, anniversary, wedding or any other type of social event. This essay concerns wedding cakes. Weddings are a means of celebrating the joining of two people who have decided to start a life with each other. A large amount of work is put into preparing the day for patrons to come eat and drink. The wedding cake is often the focal point of the event. Sometimes it's thought to be bad luck not to enjoy a slice of wedding cake.
Traditionally, there are specific guidelines when slicing the wedding cake. For instance, at a wedding reception, it is traditional to cut the wedding cake just before dessert is served, if the wedding reception takes place during lunch or the dinner hour. Nevertheless, if the reception takes place during tea or cocktails, the cake is to be cut immediately after the arrival of all the guests. As a symbol that they have chose to spend their lives together, it is tradition for a bride and groom to cut and feed one another a piece of their wedding cake. A family member or the maid of honor will slice the remainder of the cake.
Choosing a wedding cake is quite a task. Tradition calls for a white cake with white frosting for weddings. In this day and age, couples are choosing their favorite flavor. This has those who provide cakes and also those who decorate them striving to give a bigger selection of cakes. Chocolate, fruit, yellow, pound, and marble are some of the cakes made for modern weddings.
Some wedding cakes offer a different flavor for each layer. Though white icing is still available to be ordered, there is now a larger selection of frostings to choose from. There are a number of flavors used for wedding cakes including chocolate, mocha and lemon. It is possible to customize your cake using all of your favorite flavors. How the wedding cake is decorated is a personal choice as well. The decorations that can be chosen for your wedding cake are limited almost solely by your own imagination and can include things like fruit and even real, edible flowers.
The wedding reception is the most anticipated part of the wedding. To have a piece of the wedding cake is something that people look forward to as it also signifies good will and hope for the newly weds to have a prosperous life and be fertile.
There are a number of ways that one may become a cake decorator. There are hundreds of books out there that will teach you how to decorate cakes, from the simple to the ornate. There are a number of instructional DVD's that one can purchase to learn how to decorate a cake step-by-step.
The best way to learn how to decorate a cake is to attend a class. While DVD's, videos, and books are highly popular and informative, taking a class will help you move along faster. You will be able to get immediate feedback from the teacher, and they can see where you might be going wrong and correct you before the project is ruined.
