Don't Renovate Your Bathroom: Rejuvenate It!

By: Wyatt Pottoe

Home improvements are big business these days, and many homeowners are looking for ways to fix up their homes and bulk up their equity. If you're like most homeowners, you are paying close attention to improvements inside rather than outside your home, and may be focusing on the bathroom. These projects can be fun and easy, but they can also be expensive. Still, it's important to make the bathroom as relaxing and rejuvenating as possible.

If your bathroom needs an update, you don't necessarily need to bust out the paintbrush. A good scrubbing may be all that is needed. Use these tips and tricks to bring out the best in your bath:

Let the Sun Shine In

Your bathroom may not need a new window, but there's a good chance that the existing window and mirrors would all benefit greatly from a thorough cleaning. To make your glass shine crystal clear and your mirrors gleam, try a solution of 1/3 cup clear white vinegar mixed with 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol. Spray this mixture on bathroom windows and mirrors for an easy and effective deep cleaning.

No-fuss Freshness in the Shower

Once a week, scrub your tub and shower stall with an orange citrus-based commercial cleanser. Spraying the cleanser directly on all surfaces will easily dissolve built-up dirt and soap scum.

To keep the wall tiles shiny, seal any porous surfaces and create a spot-resistant finish, apply car wax twice a year. Your glass shower doors can also benefit from this easy trick. Make sure that you don't get any wax on the tub surface or tile floors, because it will create a hazardous and slippery situation.

Super Bowl

Common household vinegar can give your toilet the royal treatment. One or two cups of white vinegar, poured once a month into the toilet tank, helps keep the water clear and eliminates dirty toilet boil rings. You can use a toilet brush with solvent, or a pumice stone, to scrub away stubborn stains.

Dirt Goes Down the Drain

Bathroom sinks can always benefit from a good scrubbing. Try pouring a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Allow this mixture to sit for one hour, and then flush with warm water to fizzle dirt down the drain. This mixture can be used in your bathtub and kitchen drains as well. Use solvent and an old stiff-bristled nylon toothbrush to clean around the taps, and polish them to a gleaming finish with white vinegar and a paper towel.

Mildew Meets its Match

To complete your bathroom rejuvenation, remove all traces of mildew. A mixture of peroxide and water should be applied to the walls and ceiling to remove the dirt and germs that can cause mildew.

Before you begin an expensive bathroom renovation, hold on. It could benefit from a simple rejuvenation. Take the time for a good scrubbing and follow up with a regular weekly cleaning. You'll have the relaxing and rejuvenating oasis that you deserve.
