Dying with the Stars:the DUI Phenomenon

By: Terrence Chase

Attention: My purpose for writing this article is to sow concern to all readers regarding one concern that has been plaguing the country today This problem has actually increased in occurrence with a little help from celebrities. An increase of 6.25 percent has been made last year for this not-so-welcome intruder. If not for Paris Hilton and a host of other celebrities, driving under influence (DUI) or drunk driving would not have been a serious matter.
A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA shows that a person gets injured from drunk-driving related incidents every 2 minutes. Much worse, a person gets killed due to alcohol-related crashes every 31 minutes. That has actually worsened last year because a person gets killed on a similar situation in every 29 minutes.
Not only do people die, but it has also taken its toll on the livelihood of those people concerned. A total of US$51 billion worth of damages cost alcohol-related accidents including auto parts damages. In Kansas alone, which ranked 33rd on drunk-driving fatalities, some $3.4 million has been spent per fatality. However, costs have largely dropped to those who only got injured. Estimated cost per injured in Kansas would be $97,000. Come to think of it, that is twice larger than to what an average family would earn in Kansas ($47,725).
States which play host to big cities expectedly make up a majority to these occurrences. The top 3 states that record the most number of drunk-driving related deaths would be California, Texas, Florida. Most of these fatalities were between ages 20-29 years. Out of all the motor vehicle crashes that involved children below 14 years of age, 21 percent of them were alcohol-related .
Some 1.4 million were arrested and were charged with drunk-driving in 2005. Surprisingly, self reports of alcohol-impaired driving is more than 100 times more than what the police had arrested. Self reports due to alcohol-impaired driving have been recorded 159 million times in 2005.
If there would be anything that would appease the situation, drunk-driving in 2005 was definitely lower to that of 1982. There was a 12 percent drop in alcohol-related car crashes from 25 years ago to what had happened two years ago. However, 2006 was a great year for drunk-driving incidents as the numbers have gone up again.
I hope all these numbers would somewhat horrify all readers. In 30 minutes, someone will die because of some drunk-driving concern. I hope all will be more cautious of these increasing numbers.
