Environmentally Responsible Fish Keeping

By: Samantha Lee N. Brown

Taking care of fish is a beautiful hobby. Watching your fish moving in their aquarium can give you piece and relaxation. In fact, you may find yourself more attracted to watching your fish than doing the other things you are used to like watching television after your work. Having an aquarium can definitely add beauty to your home, especially if you keep different kinds of beautiful colored fish.

Nevertheless, people have heard of the biological and ecological harm perpetrated by certain greedy and uncaring members of the commercial aquarium industry and don't want to encourage their practices (such as using cyanide in trapping fish, killing large numbers of them in the process, and damaging marvelous coral reefs).

As you can see, it is important to take pleasure in this hobby in an eco-friendly matter. To be sure your aquarium does not harm the environment we have provided some tips you can use. You can still have a beautiful aquarium without the damaging affects.

1) Fish that have been bred in captivity are better choices than ones that can be found in their natural habitat. That way, damage will not be caused to the natural environment of the fish you obtain. In order to research places to buy fish that have been brought up in captivity, you can go online and find many sources.

2) If you have a marine/saltwater aquarium, you should contact your local aquarium hobbyist club. Its members can give you tips on breeding tropical fish and plants in captivity, supply you with sources for obtaining captive-bred fish, and provide you with a wealth of useful information.

3) Consider getting a freshwater aquarium, which is a lot easier to care for, than a marine aquarium. You are also going to find that over 90% of fish that are kept in freshwater aquariums are bred in captivity. It is possible to find freshwater fish that are just as exotic and beautiful as marine fish.

4) Before you decide to buy fish, you should know where they came from. Any pet store should be able to give you this information. If not, try to look into a specialty aquarium store or a store that is more environmentally friendly.

For a highly rewarding hobby, many people decide to buy an aquarium and keep fish. If cared for correctly, your fish will give you hours of pure delight and contentment. Another plus is that watching fish is good for both relaxation and reducing stress. Your stress level can be lowered even further by choosing to populate your tank with environmentally friendly fish.

By choosing fish that have been bred in captivity, you can be content with the fact that the natural habitats of fish have not been harmed, and your aquarium will give you extra pleasure. Have fun and enjoy your new pastime!
