Exploding The Myths Which Surround Acne

By: Donald Saunders

As is the case with with most conditions there is a lot of information out there about acne and what causes it and that information is a mixture of both fact and fiction. Thus, let us look at a few of those things that are being said and see if we can separate the myth from the fact.

Food

There is no direct connection between eating such things as chocolate or greasy hamburgers or drinking too many soft drinks and getting acne. What is true is that food plays a role in all the body's systems and therefore it does have a minor part in whether acne is more or less likely.

For example, greasy foods do not directly translate into rising oil production within the sebaceous glands that adds to acne, but foods that do cause a rise in oil production would of course have an effect. However, iodized salt is as yet the only food substance that has been shown to have any appreciable effect and it merely worsens acne but does not cause it.

Cleanliness

The odds of getting a pimple increase when a pore becomes blocked and bacteria are trapped inside. What this means is that hygiene habits that work to close the pores can play a role. However this effect is only small and the bacteria and dead cell skins that get trapped and cannot make their way out of the pore are influenced only to a small degree by an absence of regular face washing.

Nevertheless, once acne occurs good skin hygiene is especially important and mild cleansing two times each day with soap and water will help to treat acne and encourage healthy skin in general. Cleanliness is a good idea for many reasons but it is most helpful in treating acne because it provides a good surface for medications to do their work most efficiently.

Acne spots are strongly influenced by excess production of sebum (skin oil) which is triggered chiefly by hormones and harsh cleansers which are applied roughly do not merely clear away any excess oil but also weakens the the ability of the skin to deal with it.

Stress

As stress has a tendency to weaken the body's immune system and also influence its level of hormones it might be thought that stress would play a part in the onset of acne. However, there is no clear evidence that stress results in acne, although there is some evidence to show that it may play a minor role once acne has developed.

One of the problems in assessing the role of stress is that people who are suffering from chronic stress also also suffer from additional health problems which can complicate the picture. Remember too that here we are talking about clinical stress and not just the worries that we all experience as part of the ups and downs of everyday living.

Medication

A lot of us are tempted to increase the dosage of an over-the-counter medication believing that if a little medication can do a little bit of good a lot of medication will do a lot of good. Regrettably, this is not so and it is both a waste of medication and might actually harm the skin. Always stick to the instructions on any medication and if any medication is not showing signs of working within a reasonable period of time then you should seek the guidance of your dermatologist.
