Fast Track Your Career - These Time Management Tips Really Work

By: Michael Adams

Sometimes career advancement is a simple matter of a small amount of extra efficiency and productivity at work.

This can be achieved by adopting a few simple time management techniques that will have a positive and tangible effect on how you work and the results you achieve. Rather the work for weeks, months or even years for that next promotion, consider these simple suggestions that will help get you noticed.

1. Get rid of the clutter in your office. When you have a cluttered office, everyone notices, even if they don't say something to you. Sure a cluttered office may be a sign of an organized mind, but your boss probably won't take that into account the next time it comes to promoting someone. Look at it from his or her point of view for a moment and you'll see what I mean. All things being equal, would he/she rather promote someone who is neat or someone who has a cluttered desk?

Rather than wait any longer, just clean up your messy desk and office. You'll see two good things happen when you do. First, your productivity and efficiency will go up because you're no longer having to dig through a messy workspace just to find your important documents. Second, your boss and everyone else will notice your nice and clean office the next time they come by. Your now clean office is a good conversation started, especially as you talk to your boss about wanting to be promoted. Don't wait any longer, just do it and you'll be happy you did.

2. "Environment is stronger than will power". Buckminster Fuller said that and I agree with it. Now that the clutter is gone from your office, take a look around your office and select 5 elements in your workspace. For each element, ask yourself "Does this help me reach my productivity goals or is it in my way?". Just ask yourself the question and be honest about the answer. The hard part is being truly honest with yourself, but it's for your own good so just do it.

When you have the honest answer, you'll know what to do. Simply put, get rid of any element that doesn't obviously and overwhelmingly support your productivity and time management goals. I said coming up with the honest answer is the hard part. Getting rid of the object might seem hard, but trust yourself and your honest answers. Elements in your environment that don't support your goals drain your energy. Get rid of them and watch your energy rise.

Having more energy and better productivity are two key elements your boss will look for as promotion time draws near.

3. Handle emails, calls, and request efficiently. So much communication happens all day at the office and it's easy to get buried and let things like email pile up in your inbox. You can improve your chances for promotion if you respond quickly and efficiently to any and all emails, phone messages and conversations.

Keeping your email inbox under control is a tough thing to do, but you have to do it. Learn about various sorting and filtering functions that are part of your email program so you can sort the emails into different groups according to where they come from. Set up one group for your boss, one group for your peer level employees and one for your friends. Handle the emails from your boss quickly and efficiently, with response that briefly communicate that you understand what he/she is looking for and that you are following through on your responsibilities.

Communicate with your coworkers or peers using the same language and communication style, but do that after you have taken care of the email from your boss. If your coworkers find out that their emails always get answered after you answer the emails to the boss, no big deal. That's the way it should be and besides, who is going to be giving out the promotions and raises, your boss or your peers?

One more thing, about the emails you get from your friends. If you don't have a personal email address where they can email, get one fast. You don't want to be distracted at work by unnecessary "joke emails" from friends. Beside, with email security issues and the fact that employers will look into all your email, you really don't want odd events of your personal life to be stored on company email servers.

So there you have it. Those were easy and simple tips you can use to improve your chances of getting promoted at work. By following these time management tips, you'll improve your productivity and efficiency and in the process let everyone know, especially your boss, that you are the person to pick for the next promotion. Enjoy yourself and get working on them right away.
