Fighting against epilepsy

By: Ingrid Sure

If you are sick and tired or out of financial possibilities to continue with the conventional eplilepsy treatment, you can try now Alternative Therapies, for a change. Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medication. In some difficult cases, surgery may be considered. Not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong – some forms are confined to particular stages of childhood. Considered as a single disorder, epilepsy manifests rather as a group of syndromes with vastly divergent symptoms. but all involving episodic abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

The Ketogenic diet is a low carbohydrate (and high fat) diet that has been used for decades to manage Epilepsy. Dr. John Freeman's book, "The Ketogenic Diet", is a must read for parents and doctors considering this approach. This treatment has often been effective when traditional anti-seizure medications have not been useful. The diet prescribes foods high in fat and heavily restricts carbohydrate intake. As fats become the body's primary source of metabolic energy, ketones accumulate in thebrain, which can alleviate epileptic symptoms. The diet is often perceived as more effective in children than adults, particularly when anticonvulsant drug therapy is ineffective or contraindicated. The Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurology Center has long supported seizure management through Diet. It is the first center in the world for clinical and research expertise regarding the ketogenic diet, having enrolled approximately 700 children over the past few decades. The center admits approximately four children for the diet monthly.

Like the Ketogenic diet, which has been found to be of great benefit for some people with epilepsy, the Atkins diet can induce a ketotic state. Compared with the very restrictive ketogenic diet, however, the Atkins diet has fewer protein and calorie restrictions and has been used with apparent safety by millions of people for weight reduction. There is some concern that long-term use of the Atkins diet can promote the development of osteoporosis, kidney stones and other problems. Presumably, some of these potential adverse effects can be prevented by appropriate supplementation with vitamins and minerals, as recommended by Dr. Atkins in his writings.

In terms of financial aid and assistance, there are many organizations that offer different types of assitance. They have differing standards and proceedures for applying for help. Getting this assistance requires some organization and diligence in finding and applying for the benefits. But don’t feel discouraged!

Both CURE and PACE are very large charitable organizations that are not Epilepsy specific. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce or Business organizations to find a local branch. Sometimes local businesses have additional charities that they will sponsor for people in their community needing assistance.

Also, many airlines run programs where their frequent flyers will donate mileage for the benefit of children that need to travel for healthcare. Both American Airlines and Northwest are offering free tickets for participation in the Johns Hopkins study.

If you or your loved one qualifies for one of the current John Hopkins studies, all the medical expenses related to the study are free. Visits with Dr. Kossoff, consultation with the dietician, lab work analysis, etc. are all part of the study.

This article is meant to provide useful information concerning alternative diet treatments for epilepsy and financial assistance. It should not be taken as a medical advice. Let’s fight together against epilepsy!
