Finding Effective Acne Treatment For Your Skin Type

By: Jay Anderson

If you have acne, you might feel alone, but you're not. It is a disease that affects literally millions of people around the world. It does not discriminate based on age, gender or race. Many people also have difficulty finding the right acne treatment, one that's best suited for their specific type of acne.

Acne actually has different types and is not one distinct disorder. Several different things cause it as well, and this means that there are also several different kinds of acne treatment. You have to know what kind of acne you have in order to choose the right treatment for you. The right acne treatment will not only take care of your acne itself, but it could also improve your skin's health. This should be your ultimate concern.

It may be crucial that you discuss your options with your dermatologist before you begin any type of acne treatment. You do not want to waste your money on a product that does not work, is useless, or will do nothing but worsen the situation. Knowing all you can about the disorder and how it functions can be a big step in choosing the right acne treatment.

For example, did you know that there is a bacterium known as P Acnes that is the specific cause of the disorder? Why is it important to know this? Because there are really two major agents that are used to combat acne. These two are called Salicylic acid and Benzyl Peroxide. The latter is an agent that works to actually kill that bacteria, which the Salicylic acid works to exfoliate the skin, which prevents and removes clogging within your follicles.

Though these over the counter medications are only two of the many options you have, it is important to understand what each one does to understand if it can work for your skin type. This is why you should talk to your dermatologist for a little guidance.

There are many kits available on the market that claim to treat acne. In general, they provide a series of products meant to work in conjunction with each other to help treat your acne. They usually contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as their major acne ingredient, along with other products meant to do such things as sooth and tone skin after the active ingredient (benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) has been applied.

With these, you have to be careful because they may be designed for someone who has oily skin, dry skin, or normal skin. You want to be sure that you choose the right one for your skin type. The oily skin treatments are designed to dry out your skin and treat the source of the oil, while the dry skin elements are designed to moisten the face more. If you have either condition and choose the inappropriate acne treatment, you could actually be working to make your acne even worse.

In addition to choosing a proper acne treatment, you also need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. In fact, the foods you eat can actually aggravate your skin and create acne. Conversely, the foods you eat can also soothe your skin and lessen acne. By the same token, how much you sleep and how much water you drink also affects your skin. If you get at least eight hours of sleep a night and drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day, you give your skin and body the tools it needs to hydrate, heal and regenerate.
