Five Hottest Trends in Business Cards

By: Colleen Davis

Despite the fact that they have been around for decades, business cards are still extremely common in the business world. In fact, a businessperson who does not have his or her own cards is still at a disadvantage.

However, the way that business cards are designed these days is much different. Here is a look at five of the most popular trends in business cards:

1. Color Business Cards

Color has always had a place on business cards. But now more than ever, plain old black and white cards are old news. Most businesspeople do not even think about handing out a plain, colorless card anymore. Just a few years ago, black and white cards were still the norm, but now you do not see them much at all. Color has completely taken over the business card realm.

2. Graphic Design Business Cards

This category, in a way, goes hand in hand with color business cards. While business people do not want their cards to be colorless, they also do not want them to be bland and tasteless. More and more business cards are coming around with complex art or fancy logos on them. This is especially effective for people who are in the graphic design industry. If your job is to create attractive designs, you certainly do not want your business card to be boring and predictable.

3. Magnetic Business Cards

While these have been around for a while, much like color business cards, they are gaining in popularity as well. Magnetic business cards are remarkably convenient for recipients, because they can find a use for them on the family refrigerator. At the same time, businesspeople enjoy handing them out because there is a good chance that they will get looked at quite often, and that is the point of the whole thing, right?

4. Unconventional Business Cards

You could make the case that graphic design business cards and magnetic business cards are unconventional. But I am talking about truly unique cards. I have seen cards made up in the shape of dog tags or folded up like a map. I have even seen cards that were presented in the form of a lottery ticket. One particular creative card that I ran across was made out of lock picking tools; obviously they were for a locksmith company. The creativity involved in business cards you see used these days is truly amazing.

5. Raised Print Business Cards

Another popular new trend is using raised print (much like Braille) on business cards. This is often used in conjunction with color or some other eye catching technique. The raised print gives the card a unique feel, almost appearing to be more of a credit card than a business card.
