Florida is Fingerprinting Real Estate Agents.

By: Able Appanti

Today, real estate agents must meet more requirements. This is an attempt to make the industry more professional. In the past, fingerprinting was confined to crime scenes. But real estate sales associates, brokers, appraisers and appraiser instructors in Florida are now required to have their fingerprints taken. This helps to ensure that the state has a solid database of these workers.

A fingerprint is defined as "an imprint made by the pattern of ridges on the pad of a human finger. These are believed to provide traction for grasping objects and are often left on objects at a crime scene." Due to these purposes, fingerprints are used to identify suspects, as each person has a unique set of fingerprints.

In July, 2006, the state of Florida required applicants for broker's license or real estate sales associate, to undergo a mandatory electronic fingerprinting. This would reduce the processing time of their application papers. With the fingerprint results, the State can ensure that there are no illegible fingerprints or missing information.

This data is found on the fingerprint card that the Department of Business and Professional Regulation needs. It will likewise be submitted to local and national law enforcement groups. Now, there are about 15 sites across Florida for the electronic fingerprint taking. The state contracted with an electronic fingerprint vendor. The process, the longest part of application processing, takes about three days maximum. This is much shorter than the old method, which took about two months to obtain a paper copy!

For paper copies, applicants usually have to pay a license fee and for the fingerprint submission. In electronic fingerprinting, one doesn’t have to pay for the fingerprint submission, which is payable to the sheriff. That is due to the fine that it is dedicated to licensing and submission. All one has to do is include a photocopy of one’s fingerprint scan and of the receipt. This serves as proof that one has paid for one’s fingerprint submission.

Also, lifting fingerprints the traditional way could be messy since ink is applied to your fingers, which are rolled across fingerprint cards. In electronic fingerprinting, the fingers are merely rolled across glass plates and then scanned. The whole process takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

So, the question is, just how many “professionals” must have their finger prints taken to go to work? Should a health professional be fingerprinted in case he or she is involved in manslaughter with a patient? Isn’t it enough that peoples phone calls are recorded by the NSA and no legal approval was granted by the congress. Many people must urinate in a cup and hand it over to a potential employer for drug testing. Perhaps we should now put electronic tags on employees on certain professionals to follow where they go and make sure they are not up to no good…like visiting the house of neighbor that is suspect to be BOTH a communist AND a terrorist.
