Food Lovers - How to Master Weight Loss

By: Colin Johnson

Are you a big eater? Does the thought of eating less terrify you? Don't worry! It's not as scary as you think. Take some simple advice and losing weight will be much more manageable.

A well balanced diet is what we know we must have. But a well balanced diet is not necessarily a boring one. Look, it's really about planning. Buy some good low fat recipe books (there are plenty of these) or just surf the net for suitable healthy options and organise your menu for the week prior to grocery shopping. Then, armed with your shopping list, at a time you're not even a bit hungry, do your shopping and revel in the feeling of arriving at the checkout with a trolley full of mostly fruit and vegetables. Go on, try it, it feels great! Watch others admire you as they see the contents of your trolley!

It's all about attitude. You can train your mind to think differently about eating, really, you can. Try using small plates when you serve up meals. I'm not being comical, it really works! You'll feel like you're eating more! Also, don't eat your evening meal too late. Eat early and then brush your teeth immediately. For some reason this makes evening cravings dissipate.

So in a nutshell, what should we be eating? The answer is five servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit per day. Consider putting fruit on your cereal or porridge each morning and you'll have met the first requirement of one piece of fruit. It won't be too hard to munch on an apple at a regular time each day (such as when you're walking to the post office or coming home from work). I eat a carrot every day for morning tea as raw carrots actually take quite a lot of eating and I can then tick off my first serving of vegetables for the day.

In our busy lifestyles most of us have developed the nasty habit of eating too quickly. Slow down,it's not a race! The texture and flavour of the food is delightful, notice it, enjoy it! And don't neglect water. If you drink water with every meal and snack, it will fill you up and you will eat less food. Plus it has loads of other benefits. Consider leaving chopped up fruit in the fridge for easy access. It's surprising how many people eat fruit when it's ready to eat and doesn't require peeling and chopping.

When we get together with family and friends, it's usually based around food. We meet together for a meal or a coffee. When we picnic we take loads of food with us, and not always healthy food. Think of creative ways you can arrange get-togethers which do not necessarily involve food. For example, you could go for a long walk: this provides great opportunity for substancial conversations, and rather than consuming calories, you're burning them. Double benefit!

A danger for people wishing to lose weight is outings. Food is fatty and expensive at sporting and other entertainment events. Far better to pack healthy food and model healthy eating to the kids. Remember, losing weight is about lifestyle change, not a one-off diet.

As a safeguard, I make sure my family takes a health supplement every day. It gives me peace of mind to know that we are all getting the required vitamins and minerals even on days when our high dietary standards have been compromised. And realistically, we all have days which are less than ideal when it comes to food intake. After walking or doing weights I always have a whey protein shake, which helps repair and tone muscles. It also serves as a powerful appetite suppressant during the day. If you're exercising, as you should be, you will benefit from a protein based drink straight afterwards. Try it and see the difference.

Forget fad diets because they don't last. Forget starving yourself because you wont last! It's about lifestyle choices, organisation and retraining your mind. Try the tricks mentioned here: they work.
