A man of science myself I believe, that if a smoker knew what was in every cigarette he smoked he might just think twice before he lights the next cigarette. So what I propose to do with the means of this article is to highlight some of the major chemicals that cigarette smoke has a) Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) I think to put things into perspective, HCN was used by Hitler in his notorious gas chambers. Hydrogen Cyanide had a hundred percent mortality rate and unless you were lucky there was no way one could come out alive from a gas chamber. b) Formaldehyde Also commonly known as embalming fluid, formaldehyde is being used the world over for preserving dead bodies, biology specimens. One whiff of formaldehyde and you know how potent it is. c) Benzene One of the first organic compounds discovered, benzene is a known carcinogen. Benzene is the leading reason for lung cancer in smokers, benzene not only affects the lungs but pretty much all organs cigarette smoke comes in contact with, oral mucosa, larynx to name a few. d) Acrolein Also known as propenal, acrolein was used in world war I as a chemical weapon. Acrolein has a more sever effect on the lung than formaldehyde, it is a sever lung irritant and is also the leading cause for emphysema in smokers. e) Phenol The same chemical that is the principal constituent of toilet cleaners. I think everyone has seen how strong a toilet cleaner is, just imagine inhaling the same stuff every time you smoke. f) Nitrosamines Are chemicals that are shared by pesticides too, nitrosamines are the leading cause of cancer in animals and variants of nitrosamines are responsible for cancer in various human organs, N- Nitrosamines are a major by-product of cigarette smoke. g) Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide is a leading air pollutant and is primarily dumped into the air by factories and vehicles. (Using it commit suicide in cars should ring a bell, especially to movie goers). The above list would probably run into the hundreds, but I think a small insight to what goes into a smoker's lungs every time he smokes should be a motivating factor for quitting smoking. Incidentally the exact same chemicals are inhaled by people who experience secondary smoke as well. So stop playing with your life and the lives of people around you. Quit smoking today.
