Getting The Credit You Need For Your Business

By: Robert Bain

One of the biggest barriers for new businesses is obtaining credit. This is a harsh reality due to the fact that so many new businesses aren't able to become successful. Lenders really have to be careful who they give money to or they won't be able to stay in business either. While it is harder to get business credit than it is to get personal credit, stick with it. You will have to work hard to prove you are worthy of the funding, and then make sure you always use the credit wisely.

If you aren't able to meet the obligations of your business loans they will come looking for you. They can foreclose on your business and sell off your property as well as the contents. You need to always stay on top of your business expenses and talk to the lender immediately if you start to experience any problems along the way. They will be more willing to work with you at that point then once things have progressed and you are seriously behind on your payments.

You will be surprised how many people approach a lender for business credit without any real information to provide them. Sure, they talk about what they want to do and where they are going to put the business but they don't have all the details. They don't share information about the market for their business, the competition, overhead expenses, or any other details that will affect the success of their business. As a result they aren't able to establish business credit.

You may find you have to approach several lenders before you find one that is willing to give you the time of day. Be dedicated to the cause though as no one has ever become successful by giving up. It is important to realize that many doors have to close before you find one that will remain open long enough for you to step through it. Make sure your business plan is easy to follow and covers all the aspects of a new business including the risks. This will show you have taken the time to really think about the venture before attempting to secure funding for it.

Fight hard to get business credit established that is separate from your own, because you don't want to have issues with your business that will cost you your home or your car. Likewise you don't want your personal finances to affect the operations of your business. If the lender offers you the chance to get business credit either with you guaranteeing it or at a higher interest rate to stand alone go with the higher interest.

You need to know going into this that many lenders are going to try to offer you business credit that is tied in to your personal credit. This significantly reduces the risk on their end and many who want to own their own business accept these terms in order to get the money they need to start their business.

Even if you don't have to borrow money for start up costs because you have enough saved, you will eventually need to pay for expenses you can't cover out of pocket. Having a business line of credit that you can access at any time means you can make important business decisions without having to consult with a lender first. You will also find a business credit card comes in handy for small expenses, business dinners, and travel that has to be done for the sake of the business.

You need to be very careful about the scams out there, that prey on new businesses trying to obtain credit. If it sounds too good to be true it likely is so make sure you look into the details. Some of these scams take place online as the criminals have less of a chance of getting caught. Not all online lenders are bad. Be careful when you send them money to process your application or you can kiss that money goodbye. It has gone into their pocket and they are moving on to other business owners that are in your same situation.
