Graduate Career Paths For Undecided Professionals

By: Scott Deane

Everyone who is familiar with the university scene in the United Kingdom knows about the term undecided. While many young students are set along a specific path in the university setting, just as many are unable to focus in on a specific job or field that they want to enter upon graduation. Some of these students find their focus along the way but many young professionals are still uncertain about how to proceed in their postgraduate careers. Indeed, the undecided professional is becoming a common occurrence throughout the global job market. However, just because a new graduate is unsure about their career path does not mean that there aren’t jobs that can help them pay the bills while gaining experience.

Many graduates enter their professional lives as field sales representatives. Some of these graduates have an interest in sales or the particular product that they are selling. Other graduates look to field sales as a lucrative way of paying bills, gaining experience, and developing relationships after graduation. No matter the reason, field sales in a variety of industries are a great way to break into professional life. The varied daily routine along with the ability to practice communications skills are reason enough for an undecided professional to choose this path.

Other graduates that are undecided about their long term career path look for positions at retail outlets. These retail outlets often employ graduates as sales people, back-room workers, and auditors to keep track of inventory. Retail positions allow a great interaction with a diverse clientele while developing the organisational skills and work ethic needed in the modern workplace. Retail positions are a great stepping stone to management positions in a variety of fields.

Another career path for professionals unsure about their future is in banking. There are many positions available for customer service representatives and personal bankers at branches and corporate centres throughout the UK. Customer service representatives often work behind the counter and at call centres to provide support to account holders of all kinds. Personal bankers cater the bank’s different accounts to an individual client’s needs, whether it is savings, checking, or another form of bank account. Banks often look for enthusiastic young graduates, no matter their field of study, to provide help in these customer service positions. Of the aforementioned positions, banking may be the best one for a graduate looking for a potential career option. Banking offers a good practical experience in financial matters that can translate into a variety of fields.
