Guide To Hearing Loss In Children

By: Alvint Toh

Most people think that hearing loss only affects those of old age. It is affecting more children than ever. Children are found to experience hearing problems even from a very young age.

Type of hearing loss

The most common type of hearing loss among children is called sensorineural which occurs due to damage of the inner ear. The damage can be caused by an infection, injury or most commonly, through exposure to loud noise. This type of damage cannot be repaired.

Sensorineural hearing loss does not get better nor worse. The sufferer struggles to hear softer sounds, which in turn affects the ability to understand speech. A hearing aid can help with this type of hearing loss. The other types of hearing loss are conductive and mixed. Conductive hearing loss arises when sounds are not chanelled to the inner ear. It can be resolved by surgery. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

What causes hearing loss in children

The most common cause of hearing loss in children is very loud noises. There are noises which you have control and others which you have no control.

Loud music, particularly music played directly into the ear via earbuds, is one way that kids are getting exposed to noise that can damage the ears. A recent study in Australia found that children as young as three have shown signs of permanent hearing loss due to listening to loud music. Do you know that listening to music that is too loud for more than 5 to 10 minutes can produce hearing damage? Shocking but true.

Another cause of hearing loss is playing musical instruments very loudly. It has been discovered that children playing in a school band are more likely to suffer from hearing loss. This can be a more noticeable problem when the music is played in a confined area.

What is the solution

You can educate your children about the dangers of hearing loss caused by loud noises. Prevention is better than cure. Teach them how to protect their hearing.

First you should try to determine the safe volume level of mp3 players and other audio devices which your children listen with headphones. Make sure you listen to the music yourself so that you can decide what a safe volume is.

If your children are being exposed to loud noises, encourage them to wear earplugs. They should wear ear plugs while cutting the grass or practicing in the band.

You should be cautious and apply common sense when setting safe volume limits for your children. Make sure they understand the importance of taking care of their hearing and how loud noises can be detrimental to their ears.
