Harley Davidson Ultra Classic For Sale North Carolina

By: Thulas Sukati

Harley-Davidson, also known as HD, has been around for over 100 years, beginning in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin between two friends. William Harley and Arthur Davidson began working on the prototype, and eventually brought in the help of Arthur's brothers, Walter and William. From those humble beginnings would rise an incorporated company, The skills of Walter as a mechanic and William as a toolmaker were instrumental in those early successes of the HD Company.

All three of the Harley-Davidson's motorcycles in 1903 were paid for prior to completion and these were the only bikes produced in their first year of business. The early motorcycles did not show the brightness of their later counterparts, as they were all gray, earning them the name 'Silent Gray Fellows. Within two years, the company added motorcycle and marine motors, reversible propellers, and float feed carburetors to their stock of sellable items.

The following ten years saw an ensuring climb in popularity for Harley-Davidson. S. Postal service was using over 4,800 bikes for rural mail delivery, while eight over departments in the federal government also employed them. Machine guns were added to the government's HD products as they faced off against Pancho Villa in border disputes in 1916. Their motorcycles were also used in World War I with half of all models produced being shipped overseas.

The sport of racing was the way that HD thrived and prospered in the post-war years of the 1920s. The Great Depression did have a toll on Harley-Davidson, but it was not a strong enough one to stop the expansion and prosperity of the company. With the forties came the United States' entry into World War II, as they had during the First World War, the HD's served the country well.

Throughout the fifties, HD increased the fierceness of their marketing, and as a result, saw additional prosperity. The Jeep was favored by the government over the motorcycles when war once again was declared during the 1950s in Korea. Harley-Davidson responded to this by simply continuing to target their already expansive civilian consumer base.

The 1960s were a decade of change for the company, as well as the rest of the United States. This decade is when the company began producing 3-wheeled golf carts. Though they were sold overseas, the carts' greatest success came at home, where they were able to successfully dominate over a third of the market. Motorcycle accessories became part of the company's success as well during this period, as Harley-Davidson began their own product line.

The 1970s produced advancements in racing techniques in the bikes produced by Harley-Davidson and as a result, the bikes saw continued success in the racing sport. The 1980s were a decade of great financial change for many companies, and for the HD Company, this was especially true when they became a private ownership again as the result of a buyback. The California Highway Patrol took note of the company's standards of excellence in the 1980s, granting the company contract rights in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989.

The 1990s included the addition of the FLSTF Fatboy to the Harley-Davidson line of customized factory motorcycles. The production of this bike allowed buyers to produce high quality items that were both evocative of previous era's products, and contemporary enough to compete in the present-day market. With the twenty-first century, the company continues to prove its strength and staying power. There are a number of lines of bikes made by the HD company, and these include the Sporster, the Dyna, the Softail, the VRSC, and a Touring line, the amount of models that branch off from those lines are numerous.
