Havanese Hair Cut: The Proper Way To Show Your Dog

By: Fiona Kelly

Havanese grooming is an important part of owning one of these sweet little toy dogs. If you are planning to show your Havanese in any competitions, it becomes even more important. The beauty of a Havanese grooming routine is that it doesn't have to be a difficult process. As long as you remember to stay calm throughout the entire session, your dog will remain calm, as well. This is especially important, as these dogs are by their very nature playful and energetic.

One of the most important things to know about giving your Havanese a hair cut, is that there are very specific rules set forth by the AKC that state exactly how your dog should be clipped. Ignore these specifications, and you run the risk of having your dog disqualified from the show. Of course, if you do not plan on entering your Havanese into any competitions, this won't be an issue for you. But a good grooming routine for your Havanese is still an important part of owning one of these special little dogs.

One of the first things you need to know about giving your Havanese a haircut is that you should only trim the hair on the paws (to give them a more circular appearance), and the rump and groin area. Trimming the hair on the face and ears if strictly forbidden if you want to enter your dog into champion competitions.

Havanese by their very nature do not shed, so brushing them daily is important to keeping their coats free of any loose or damaged hair. Brushing daily as a part of your Havanese grooming routine will also help to keep their coats nice and shiny.

If you do decide to give your Havanese a hair cut, it is important to remember to only use a number 40 blade in your clipping shears. This will help to prevent the fur around the paws from being clipped too short. If you do make a mistake, simply trim around the affected area carefully, to help restore the round, desired shape. A small pair of trimming scissors may be used to clip the rump and groin areas, but be sure that you adhere to the rules for length.

If you have no plans for showing your Havanese, then giving your Havanese a hair cut really isn't that big a deal, as far as guidelines go. You should remember that the Havanese are generally supposed to look as natural as possible so topknots, and docked tails and ears should be avoided as much as possible. Really, though, you are the only one who can decide just how short you want your dog's fur to be. If they spend most of their time outdoors, you may want to consider trimming the hair on their feet and face more often than if they are an inside dog.

Giving your Havanese a hair cut doesn't have to be a difficult process. The most important part of grooming your Havanese - whether brushing, bathing, or giving your Havanese a hair cut - is to go about it in a calm, and reserved manner.

And if your dog has dry hair and skin, they will probably require oiling 24 hours prior to giving your Havanese a hair cut. All in all, the Havanese grooming process is an easy one, if you can follow these simple rules.
