Home Gyms " Choosing The Best Home Gym for You

By: Kenneth Weider

Many a home gym has been purchased, only to wind up in the garage collecting dust and serving as shelving. Some home gyms purchased have been fortunate enough to make it to a garage sale. Before you start home gyms there are many things to consider.

With the introduction of the Bowflex, home gyms have skyrocketed in both popularity and use. But even the Bowflex home gym can lose its initial luster if the buyer has not done their due diligence before purchasing.

Consider the following when purchasing a new home gym:

1. Are you planning on exercising certain muscle groups or the entire body? This is important as some home gyms target just the upper body and others the whole body.

2. Where are you planning on putting your home gym? Most people put their home gyms in the garage, spare bedroom, or a dedicated work out room. Remember, if you put it in the garage you will be dealing with temperature extremes that may be prohibitive to you using your home gym.

3. If you are use to working out with weights, consider buying a plate loading home gym. If you are use to working out with machines, consider home gyms with weight stacks that are adjusted with a pin.

4. Take in account cables and moving parts when purchasing a home gym. Cables have a tendency to wear out after a period of time and pulleys can become worn and inoperable. This is where you might consider a home gym that uses weights that you load.

Now comes the fun part. You need to determine the return on your home gym investment. If you are looking at spending thousands of dollars, calculate how many months of membership you will have a local health club for the same price. Also, take in account that you have to be extremely self-disciplined to workout at home.
