Hosting a great Murder Mystery dinner

By: Bryan Hallett

Are you looking for something special to entertain your friends at a dinner party? We've all been to those dull where the food is great, the company fun, but the conversation never gets started and guests start vying for who will be the first to leave as the coffee gets cold.

Well, there is a solution to this. Why not host a murder mystery game, with each of your guests acting out a role to unfold a devious and deadly plot over the hors d'oeuvres? If you have the sort of friends who are up for anything and enjoy a mental challenge, this is just the sort of thing that will intrigue and amuse them, and make you a host to remember.

Organizing such a party need not be difficult and they can be suited to all ages from teenagers to senior citizens. The Internet is full of resources to get you started, as any Google search for “murder mystery” will prove. So, where to start?

It's best to consider who your guests might be. If they are up for a giggle, the sort of people you like to mix with, then you have a good start. Some may be a little more coy, but you can adjust your theme to take account of those too – just ensure that you have at least six natural jokers or actors and you will have you party started.

Next think of a theme. You could go for the hackneyed route of Agatha Christie type mysteries, but why not try something different? You could set your mystery any time or anywhere: a haunted mansion, a space craft, a baseball game or the French Revolution. Be inventive and use your location and interests as a starting point. Put together a a list of possibles and see what resources are out there to make your scenario a reality.

There are three ways you could approach this, and what you choose will depend upon your budget, your available time for planning and how confident you are.

Firstly, you could do the whole thing yourself, but this is a tricky job and you may not have the skills to undertake it if you've never hosted such an event before.

If you don't have the time, then why not order a kit that does everything for you? You can buy pre-boxed games or download packs that have invites, character profiles and cue cards ready made for you All you need to worry about is inviting your friends, as most have a CD to conduct the evening seamlessly, and are perfect for those who have not hosted a murder mystery party before. Your choice of plot is more limited this way, but you should be able to find something that everyone will enjoy.

Lastly, consider hiring someone to write your own scenario, and perhaps book them to bring along some outrageous mystery performers. Again there are many options for you here, as a Google search for “murder mystery party” will make obvious. This may not be the cheapest way to do it, but you have everything done for you, are guaranteed a night that runs like clockwork and can often specify precisely what sort of mystery you want. Such troupes are experienced at drawing the guests into the mystery and fun and hilarity is assured. So now you have many possible ideas, what are you waiting for?
