How Best To Handle Your First Interview For Newly Graduated Software Engineers Seeking Their First Position

By: Chelsea Michaels

As a recent graduate you may be experiencing some difficulties within the UK job market especially where any IT market is concerned. The IT boom has come to a close and it’s not as easy as three or four years ago, easy employment in IT has disappeared. There are definitely things you can do to help yourself achieve the perfect position especially as interviews can make the difference.

Strengths and Weaknesses
It is vital to be aware where you need to enhance your skills, If your only experience of programming is in Haskell and the job available consists of some Object Oriented languages like Java then it’s highly important that you do some reading and start learning by yourself – let your interviewer know and highlight it. It will show that you are recognize that you have some short comings but are a person who is trying to improve their skill base outside of working hours. Many interviewers will then take an interest in training you especially when they see you have a willingness to learn.

Working Experience
When you’re a candidate straight out of university with very little or not much practical working experience , applying your knowledge in real life working environments then, enhance your experiences such as team projects and any tuition you gave to lower year students as well as your ability to project manage your final year. Chances are if your application made it to interview stage that the company are looking to take on a trainee who may be able to teach them something new. Show that you have confidence! If you don’t then who else will?

Show Knowledge Of The Programme In Question
Don’t apply for a programming job if you have no actual experience of the programme required. If all of your experience is in PHP but have little or no .NET knowledge and in the position available .NET programming is heavily featured in the job role, then use your intellegance and teach yourself the basic constructs and standard object libraries for .NET.

There Ia Always A Test
It is standard practice nowadays to set IT professionals a test to make sure you have the essential practical skills and to see how you react to pressure. You must ensure that you have prepared well for the test especially when it is a language you have a lack of actual experience in so preparations through research and reading up is essential when a new language is concerned.

IT Working Environment
Think about things you should show interest in about the typical working structure you may start working in, question them about the seating arrangements, do they practice extreme programming, brainstorming or other activities and ask what they do to to relieve stress! Questions like this emphasize that you are seriously thinking about the conditions of this particular work place.
