How to hold a Murder Mystery dinner

By: Bryan Hallett

We’ve all been to dinner parties and talked endlessly about the kids, or politics or the best place to dine out. Once the dinner is over everyone is about ready to leave and a week later the party is forgotten.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could make your evening something different and something that your friends discuss for months to come? Well, if your friends are the type who are up for a laugh once they’ve had a few drinks, then a murder mystery evening would be just the thing to occupy their thoughts

Organizing such a party need not be difficult and they can be suited to all ages from teenagers to senior citizens. The Internet is full of resources to get you started, as any Google search for “murder mystery” will prove. So, where to start?

To start, look at your list of guests. Are they fun people? Probably, that's why they are your friends. But perhaps some of them are wallflowers and some like to be in the thick of the action. Provided you have, six of the latter, you can find a thrilling murder story that will entertain everyone... even your more shy and retiring companions.

Now you need a theme for the evening party. We've all seen the Agatha Christie stories where a group of strangers meet in an old mansion, or a house party goes wrong, but don't limit yourself to the traditional. Go wild and find a theme that will amuse your guests. You could set your story anywhere from Ancient Greece to the far distant future, and in any country from China to Mars – the secret is to find something that enthuses you. Draw up a list of ideas and you can begin your search for someone to help you realize your dreams.

There are three ways you could do this, and what you choose will depend upon your budget, your available time for planning and previous experiences.

Firstly, you could do the whole thing yourself, but this is hard work and you may not have the skills to undertake it if you've never hosted such an event before.

If you don't have the time, then why not order a kit that does everything for you? You can buy pre-boxed games or download packs that have invites, character profiles and cue cards ready made for you All you need to worry about is inviting your friends, as most have a CD to conduct the evening perfectly, and are perfect for those who have not hosted a murder mystery party before. Your choice of plot is more limited this way, but you should be able to find something that everyone will enjoy.

Lastly, consider hiring someone to write your own mystery, and perhaps book them to bring along some outrageous mystery performers. Again there are many options for you here, as a Google search for “murder mystery evening” will show. This may be the most expensive option, but you have so little to worry about, are guaranteed a night that runs smoothly and can often specify precisely what sort of party you want. Such troupes are experienced at creating a special event for you and fun and hilarity is assured. So now you have many possible ideas, what are you waiting for?
