If You Believe That You Cannot Afford Health Insurance Then You Are In For A Surprise.

By: Donald Saunders

An amazing one in five adult Americans state that they are not able to afford satisfactory health care according to the latest report released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). So, are you one of the more than 40 million adults who cannot sleep comfortably in their beds at night for fear of being unable to meet the cost of treatment should you have an accident or illness? Perhaps more importantly, have you got to be amongst the 40 million?

The report of the CDC which was put out in 2007 and explored health care around the US looked in depth at a number of aspects of health care and revealed that:

1. One out of every 10 people cannot presently afford the cost of prescription medication.

2. One out of every 10 people postpone having medical treatment as a result of the cost.

3. No fewer than nearly one in three young people aged between 18 and 24 do not have a usual source of medical treatment or health care insurance.

4. One out of every 10 people aged between 45 and 64 do not have a usual source of medical treatment and about fifty percent of these people are suffering from high blood pressure, major heart conditions or diabetes.

5. One out of every 5 individuals under the age of 65 are uninsured for at least part of each year, with the majority of these having no insurance throughout the year.

Many people are fortunate enough to get cover through schemes operated by their employer, however escalating costs are forcing an increasing number of employers to reduce their group health insurance plans or to do away with them altogether. However, there are also millions of people who do not qualify for cover through their employment and who need to make arrangements for themselves. It is this second group which often considers that health care insurance is simply too costly.

So should you dismiss the idea of getting health insurance merely because you feel that it costs too much? Health insurance comes in many different shapes and sizes and, in spite of the fact that a traditional indemnity fee-for-service plan can be very expensive, there are numerous affordable alternatives.

Put simply, medical insurance falls into roughly two categories comprising disability plans and medical expense plans. The former covers your lost income if you are not able to work as a result of disability and the latter provides cover for medical bills as the result of injury or accident.

Each of these forms of medical insurance can be written as an individual policy or separately and individual policies can again be broken down to provide cover for particular areas such as accident coverage, basic medical expenses, hospital care, major medical expenses and much more.

Further, cover nowadays can be offered by not only traditional insurance companies, but also by various group organizations, companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, HMOs and PPOs, each of which can offer a range of policies with payment options which match virtually any pocket book.

If you have been frightened by the thought that you simply cannot afford to pay for health insurance then think again. You may not be able to buy a comprehensive policy covering every eventuality but it is a sure bet that you will be able to locate a policy which will give you sufficient cover to allow you peace of mind.
