Interior Design - Cozy, Compact Niches With Bold Drama

By: Vickie Daeley

Every bit of space counts.

It is commonly thought that if you are decorating a small room, you should use small furniture pieces and various other items in order to make the room look bigger. People seem to forget that "less is more" and makes for great impact when designing small spaces.

Small rooms don't have to limit you to smaller pieces of furniture in order to present an open, airy feel. Frequently, placing a few larger pieces in the room will not only assist in easier room flow but causes the space to feel more inviting and larger than the square footage actually is.

Another issue that many people have difficulty with when decorating small areas is color. Frequently, deeper or brighter colors and patterns on the grand scale in wallcoverings are a better choice for these little jewels. Think of colors that you feel comfortable wearing or rooms where you've been that seem to enfold you with a welcoming warmth.

Ponder the usage of the room. When decorating an office, for example, ask yourself how frequently this space will be utilized and if intense concentration is necessary or if this is a space for casual correspondence and household accounts.

How much concentration will you need in this room? You may want to tone down your favorite colors a bit for a less lively ambience and more ability to focus on the job in front of you. Or you may need more vibrant colors to keep you alert.

When using an office in a part-time fashion, you may find bolder colors in a large scale pattern will work as it may not be necessary to concentration.
