Interior Designer:

By: Sue Smith

The main objective of an interior designer is to improve the aesthetic and safety functions of interior premises. It is essential for interior designers to be familiar with the very latest materials, fabrics, furniture and colors. They also require budgeting skills and need to have an insight in to ordering and maintenance of different objects within a defined space. Their communication skills assist them in efficient interaction with contractors and clients regarding implementation of various plans.

Designers enhance interiors of private residences, hotels, schools, restaurants, theatres, airports, offices and shopping malls. The functions of an interior designer planning a building renovation include reading and interpreting architectural plans and understanding fire codes. A designer needs to make suitable arrangements of space for the physically disabled.Interior designing of an office has to be such that it provides a soothing working environment. On the other hand, an interior designer needs to achieve a relaxing and calm atmosphere for a hospital project. Thus, the interior design needs to suit both the purpose of space and the need of its occupants.

Therefore, the very first step of interior designing is programming. Here, the designer has a direct interaction with the client and makes a thorough research of space function. The designer makes a visit to that area to get an estimate of required equipment and considers the client's requirements and budget. Accordingly, the planning process starts. In recent times,an increasing number of designers make use of computer-aided design (CAD), since it provides more detailed corrections than hand-made sketches. The interior designer, after completing a plan submits a report to the client and may make necessary changes according to what the client desires. After gaining a final approval, the designer defines certain equipments and materials such as wallpaper, carpet covering, lighting, flooring and furnishings. Depending on the complexity of assignment, interior designers collaborate with electricians, building contractors and architects for technical functions such as wiring, plumbing and lighting. An interior designer may also contact a construction inspector to ensure the design meets the requirements of the building codes.

Site visits with the client throughout the project ensures the client is satisfied and helps in making any necessary changes or alterations to suit. It is common for interior decorators to select specific accessories, color schemes and styles. Some interior designers prefer taking the entire process in their own hands as they usually have established contacts and sources for particular accessories.

Recently, designers are keen and skilled in a particular design element such as health care facilities, lighting or security. On the other hand, an interior designer may also specialize in a specific area of interior designing such as the building type, which may vary from commercial to residential styles. This latest trend is a result of rising competition. Other competitive factors are the increase in demand for home renovations and rising demands for kitchen and bath designs, outdoor living space, home spas and indoor gardens.
