Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a very complex developmental disorder. Researchers estimate that as many as 36 out of every 10,000 children are affected by (AS). Both male and female children can have this condition, although it is much more common in boys. Not only do children with Aspergers Syndrome show normal to above normal intelligence, they also have no or very little speech problems. Generally, children with (AS) will show hardships in three main areas: Behavioral - Communication - Social Unless you are looking for (AS), it is difficult to diagnose. Many children go undiagnosed and some are evn misdiagnosed with (ADD) or other behavior related conditions. Common problems associated with (AS) in children have been found to include but are not limited to: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Depression - Bipolar Disorder - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Generalized Anxiety Disorder - Oppositional Defiant Disorder - Tic Disorders, like Tourette's (AS) is part of a family of disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders, or PDDS. These are also known as Autistic Spectrum Disorders to the English-speaking countries. Although this condition was identified more than 60 years ago, there is still no single known cause of this disorder or cure for it. It is, however, known to be linked to genetics so if someone in your family has the disorder, it is more likely to be passed on.
