Is World Of Warcraft Becoming A Religion?

By: Lloyd Burns

The World of Warcraft and with all its expansion versions has captivated the gaming public more than any other MMORPG ever. Actually that statement is an understatement as it might just fail to reveal the extent the gaming world has been fascinated by this game ever since its release since 2004. It has the highest number of paid subscribers than any other game in the same genre. This has given rise to the question if it is becoming a religion.

World of Warcraft is a game played the world over. It has over eight million playing fans worldwide. This number far exceeds the number of many countries in the world today. About one and half million players are said to be in Europe while North America has an impressive two million. China boosts an awe inspiring number of three and half million players. This is no longer just a game as it affects more than just gaming world. It is fast becoming a new worldwide craze.

The greatest attraction of the World of Warcraft, as most of its dedicated players would say, is the scope to evolve within the game from a struggling lowlife to a strategist. People could evolve up to 60 levels in the original Warcraft. But with The Burning Crusade patch, players can hope to go up to 70 levels and the yet to be released patch of Wrath of the Lich King will bring up the level to 80.

A separate lingua franca has evolved for the game as so many people playing World of Warcraft from all over the world all the time, Game's interface can be used to converse with each other as many players are just engrossed using terms from the game itself.

The number of players for the World of Warcraft hasn't dwindled in the years after its release, and there seems to be no chance for it to happen in the near future. It is not wrong to say that among the reverent gaming population of the world, the World of Warcraft is nothing short of a religion.
