Mexican Auto Insurance: Don't Risk Jail With Cheap Imitations!

By: Linden Gray

Mexico consistently ranks amongst the top ten destinations for travelers. Its tropical resorts and mountain retreats offer a range of activities from shopping to adventure sports. It also creates the right circumstances for accidents and injuries.

According to the United States Department of State, the lead U.S. foreign affairs agency, many American visitors assume the standards of security and safety are the same In Mexico as they are in the U.S. These presumptions have lead not only to serious injuries, but even deaths.

Because of differences in Mexican law, situations are made even more dire because needed care after an auto accident or medical emergency can become slowed down by bureaucracy and other entanglements. Therefore, the US State Department urges all citizens to take responsibly for their own safety. American and Canadian tourists should also make sure that they have comprehensive auto and medical insurance that they need.

When You Drive in Mexico: In Mexico, you are presumed guilty until proven innocent. You must have a Mexican insurance policy from a company that is admitted and authorized to do business in Mexico in order for any damages or injuries you cause to others to be mitigated.

U.S liability insurance is simply not valid in Mexico. This includes most of the major U.S. collision and comprehensive coverage plans.

As well as Mexico auto liability insurance, drivers should make sure their auto policy includes legal aid and bond fees.

In Mexico, it is considered a felony to have a traffic accident. While the police are investigating who caused the accident, your vehicle may be impounded and you will be detained by Mexican authorities.

Even more importantly, the State Department says that American travelers may not be allowed to leave Mexico even if they have life-threatening injuries.

Emergency Services and Evacuation

Even though Mexico provides national health care at no cost, this luxury is not afforded to visitors. The only time a tourist may receive medical treatment and medicine is when they visit a private hospital. Look at your medical insurance company guidelines to make sure your policy is valid in Mexico. Ask also whether or not emergency medical expenses are covered, such as medical evacuation. (most policies do not)

The majority of medical assistance plans only take care of certain portions of the cost as it applies to location or the source of injury. As for people with Medicare, the fees required at a hospital or another medical care facility beyond the U.S. are ineligible.

It's important to try to fill the gaps and exclusions that many mexican auto insurance policies have. Astute travelers should add an emergency medical assistance option because most health plans exclude medical evacuation in foreign countries

Choosing A Plan: The most convenient and affordable method of locating Mexican auto insurance is on the Internet. When choosing a plan, it is recommended to seek out an option that provides the following:

Third Party (Civil) Liability with Adequate Limits (CSL or Split) Driver and Passenger Medical Expenses Coverage Emergency Medical Cover (Land & Air Evacuation) Physical Damage and Theft of Vehicle Legal Assistance and Bail Bond Costs Roadside Support and Rental Car Partial Theft and Vandalism with Repairs OK in MX or US

Also, check to see if the plan you side with will cover you throughout the complete duration of your stay. Plans are available for daily, six-month, and yearly policies. After 22-26 days it may be more affordable to purchase a bi-annual or annual policy.
