Pityriasis Alba Facts and Pityriasis AlbaTreatment

By: Yuvi

Pityriasis alba is a common skin condition affecting children and occasionally young adults. Pityriasis alba is a mild form of dermatitis of unknown cause. It will clear up after a few months, or in some cases persist two or three years. The colour gradually returns completely to normal. No treatment is necessary, but a moisturizing cream may improve the dry appearance. If the patches are red or itchy, a mild topical steroid cream can be applied for a few days

Several round or oval slightly scaly pink patches appear, leaving pale marks when the redness has faded. Size of patch is about that of a rupee; lesion is solitary or there may be 2-3 patches. Pityriasis Alba mainly affects the forehead, cheeks and chin of children, to a less extent, that of adults. It can occur at any time of the year, but is more common in cold winter and dry hot summer. Pityriasis alba depend on the body symmetric minimally scaly hypopigmented discrete and confluent macules.

* The exect cause is not known.
* Idiopathic disorders.
* Pityriasis alba often becomes more noticeable after sun exposure.
* Heavily scented detergents or soaps.
* Abrasive clothing.
* Smoking.

Sign and symptoms may include the following:

Oval patches on face.
Fine scale.
Slight scaling.
White patches.
Flat or slightly elevated.

Pityriasis Alba Treatment

Treatment of the rash is not necessary since it will resolve on its own. Using a moisturizer or hydrocortisone may make the patches go away faster. However, even with treatment, the rash may take months to resolve.

To prevent or reduce recurrence of the patches, keep your child's facial skin well moisturized and of course protected with a good sunscreen at all times.

It is possible to have tinea versicolor lesions on the face - a fungal infection. These patches have a much more distinct border, and would typically also involve the classic areas of the neck, shoulders and upper back.
