Pruritus Facts and Treatment

By: Yuvi

Pruritus and itch are synonymous terms. Pruritus is defined as an unpleasant sensation on the skin that provokes the desire to rub or scratch the area to obtain relief. Pruritus can cause discomfort and frustration; in severe cases it can lead to disturbed sleep, anxiety and depression. It involves nerves in the skin responding to certain chemicals such as histamine, and then processing these signals in the brain. Pruritis can be a symptom of certain skin diseases, and sometimes a manifestation of an internal process. In other patients where there is no evidence of skin or internal disease, pruritis may be due to faulty processing of the itch sensation within the nervous system. There are several internal diseases that may cause itch. The most common example is kidney failure.

Causes

Anal itching can be caused by irritating chemicals in the foods we eat, such as are found in spices, hot sauces, and peppers. It also can be caused by the irritation of frequent liquid stools, diarrhea, or escape of small amounts of stool (incontinence). Another main cause is yeast infection or Candidiasis.
Some diseases increase the possibility of yeast infections, such as diabetes mellitus or HIV infection. Treatment with antibiotics can lead to a yeast infection and irritation of the anus. Psoriasis also can irritate the anus.

Pruritis Treatment

Treatment of pruritus can be categorized in several ways. A common method of grouping the various options is causative vs. symptomatic treatment. Causative treatment involves finding the underlying disorder and then correcting it, thereby eliminating the itch sensation. Symptomatic treatment involves substituting another sensation for the itch, using methods such as cooling, heating, or counter irritation (e.g., scratching).
