Running Errands to Earn Extra Income

By: David Forsythe

It almost seems like everyone has some kind of side job on the side to make some extra money these days. Of course with the cost of living outpacing income increases, this is bound to happen. The truth is that most of us simply cannot make ends meet using the income from our primary job. This has forced millions of Americans to become rather creative when devising new means of earning some extra money.

Financial experts very often advice us to make investments in mutual funds and annuities. However, the truth is that one needs some set aside money to make these investments. People have now started turning their expertise into profitable ways of making that extra bit of money.

There are a lot of people who have some extra cash to spare but no time. Then there are those who have enough time but not enough cash. The two can mutually gel to get some good results. The latter can run errands for the former and make some extra bucks that certainly won't hurt. You can think of making profit out of doing simple work for people such as Grocery shopping, gift shopping, running movies back, picking up dry cleaning, and a host of other rather tedious activities that can be easily handled by you. Thus, you can make money out of running errands.

The start up cost for errand services are comparatively low. You do not have those heavy investment and financing considerations to make. All you need is a computer to help track business expenses, generate invoices, and perform general bookkeeping duties, a cell phone to always stay accessible to your clients, some business cards and a necessary business license and bingo, you are ready to go and make some extra bucks out of an errand service.

Remember, it takes time to build your clientele. Basically, you will have to rely on word of mouth because initially people may not be willing to pay you to run their errands. You have to be patient and persevering. Your honest and sincere efforts will help you succeed. In addition, you can try marketing in fitness clubs, coffee shops, and beauty salons where you can leave a business card for people to look at and get in touch with you.

You have to remember when trying to build your customer base who precisely your target market truly is. Business professionals and small business owners are those most likely to have the money, but not the time, to run their errands. This is your target market so you need to focus all of your marketing efforts on this demographic.

You can start off with dong little work for friends and family, taking little or no charge. It helps you get good experience and build references in this word-of-mouth business. This is sure to generate more business for you down the road. Finally you can move on to serving more people at a higher cost.

While you may have never considered running an errand service as a viable means of earning some extra income, the fact remains that this is a growing field with unlimited income potential. For people with an established errand business, it is not uncommon for them to command anywhere from 15 to 100 dollars an hour for their services. Truly, an errand service may start out as a part-time thing and turn into your full-time profession allowing you the freedom and financial independence never possible when working for other people.
