Sony Ericsson C905 – is this the best camera phone ever?

Announced today, the Sony Ericsson C905 is the first camera phone for the UK that will smash the 5 megapixel hurdle, coming in at a massive 8.1 megapixels. But the question is… will it put all other mobile phones in the shade?

If you cast your mind back through the history of mobile phones, it’s hard nowadays to imagine them having no camera, since the sum total of mobile phones that don’t have cameras in the universe, today, stands at about 4 and a bit. Camera phones are so ubiquitous, today, that it actually IS hard to picture a time when they weren’t around, even though it was only about 5 years ago. Well, it was a single company who really set offkicked off the camera phone craze in the UK, and brought about the evolution of the rich variety of camera mobile phones that we have today; that company was Sony Ericsson.
The first phone to come to the UK with a built-in camera was the Sony Ericsson P800, a touchscreen mobile that redefined what mobile phones could be and do. And yes, it had a camera. Not a very good one, granted, since it was only VGA, but that’s not the point. It opened the way for others to follow. So, it really was Sony Ericsson who began the craze in the UK, way before happy slapping videos, and Youtube uploads from your mobile. They were the mould-breakers, the ones who set the benchmark.
And now they’re at it again, with their upcoming Sony Ericsson C905, a mobile phone which may well be the best camera phone the UK has EVER experienced!

Let’s begin with the obvious killer feature: the Sony Ericsson C905 has an 8.1 megapixel camera. It’s the first mobile phone announced in the UK to have that, so it’s fair to say that it’s drawing some very admiring glances because of that! The key thing, though, is whether this Sony Ericsson beastie is in fact any good, because as we all know, increasing the megapixels without doing anything else won’t make a truly mind-blowing camera phone. It needs good lenses, good software, loads of features and lord knows what else to make it truly amazing.
Fortunately, Sony Ericsson know what they’re doingtheir stuff (they were the first, remember), so what we get here is not JUST 8.1 megapixels, a figure that other new mobile phones can and will surpass in time. Unlike mobile phones from other manufacturers, you also get Cyber-Shot technology, meaning it actually is a proper successor to your digital camera. And the example photos floating round out there tell us one thing in particular; categorically, right here and now, the Sony Ericsson C905 is going to blow you away!
