Take Control of Your Finances - 7 Steps that will work for you

By: Monty Loree

1. See that you've got a challenge with over buying. If you're arguing with your significant other about finances, or you're over anxious about the money you've spent, the time is now to stop and internalize your money issues. Ponder exactly about what's at the root of your money disputes. Is your significant other carried away with buying and / or are you getting carried away with your buying habits?

2. Drop by a restful area and begin to transcribe your monetary situation. Get into a restful area for a minimum of one hour. Makes notes about your income and how much your expenses are. Create a in flow vs out flow worksheet.

If the kitchen area in your house is too distracting and the kids are distracting you, drive to a local tea room or university study area to fully concentrate on your financial information for 1.5-2 hours.

A huge issue I've recognized with my family and friends and myself is that we can get too caught up in the day to day activities and don't have the time to concentrate on our spending habits.

At the time when I would spend too much, I was excessively busy and in denial about my spending problems. My dad commented several times that I spilled more money than he made. I was in agreement with what he said. Being immersed in business building, I didn't want to deal with my money problems.

3. Accept that if you're spending too much, you're out of control and too much to do. It is urgent that you get your task level back into control.

If ever you've commented, "I'm too buried to do a money strategy for myself", then obviously you've got too much on your plate. If you want to work yourself out of your own money problems, it is a must do to rewrite your time plans and take more time actively working on your money plan.

With your family activities keeping you busy, you may need to cut out some of them temporary while you organize your finances. This might be difficult but it is necessary.

Giving yourself time to concentrate on your finances will automatically start the process going forward.

4. Structured financial counseling may help It's difficult to seriously accept the fact that you're over spending if you're still too busy and still not able to give yourself the time to internalize that you've got a problem.

If you are a busy person it may take a while for you to accept the fact that you're overspending. The beauty of a program such as Til Debt Do Us Part is that the couple is required to concentrate on their finances. The cast are required to do exercises in order to get them in touch with their financial lives.

For some, seeking professional help for finacial woes is the only answer.

In the past, I've sat with a counsellor and talked about issues from marriage, to business, to finances, etc. I found it extremely helpful to get out of my busy life for an hour or two and have a discussion about that day's topic. It stopped all of the outside noise and gave me the time to concentrate on the topic at hand.

Seeking councelling may be a way for you to set your sights on your finances but allocating a set amount of time to correct it.

When Gail Vaz-Oxlade, the counsellor on the show Til Debt Do Us Part, spoke with Melinda about her problem Melinda started immediately on fixing it. Sometimes, all we need is a push.

By stating the obvious " If you keep spending this way, you'll increase your debt by $34,000 in 6 months, and $500,000 in 5 years." said Gail Vaz-Oxlade.

With help from an experienced professional in finances, you can change the direction in which your overspending is taking you and correct it before it gets out of hand.

5. Develop a new plan for your finances. This requires you to go to your quiet place again. You need to take the time in a quiet place to develop your new financial plan.

Here are some things that you might want to look at * How much money do I need for my highest priority debts? * How much money do I need for my highest priority expenses? * How much should I save up to develop financial reserves? * What items are things that I can do without?

It is pretty straight forward when it comes to working on your finances. List your highest priority debts and expenses first, and then if you have money left over, start planning your savings. ( Yes... Savings!! )

6. Give yourself time to get in touch with your finances. Emotional agony leads into financial agony and both are very difficult to deal with. Just take the necessay time to handle things properly.

By taking control of your financial situation, you are giving your permission to take the time needed to fix your problem.

Stop which ever activities you need to in order to have the proper time to work on your finances. This process may take a few months to work itself out. If getting in control of your finances is a high enough property, you'll have to spend several hours working it out. And... as you run into snags and questions, you'll have to take time to work those out as well.

Give yourself permission to take what ever time is needed to work on your finances. ( I've learned this the hard way over the years. )

7. Live your financial plan - NOW!! Take control and live your financial plan. It is vital if you want to succeed in overcoming your overspending. If it is causing you headaches, then find the solution.

Realizing that living the plan does not mean that all your financial woes will go away. It is just the beginning of your new life without money problems.

Focus, focus, focus to help you start thinking about your financial problems.
